How to unlock the Great Fairies in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

The Great Fairies are one of the hidden characters that you can unlock in Age of Calamity. Unlike the majority of the game's playable characters, who are unlocked by finishing story missions, the Great Fairies are earned by completing a number of side missions.

First, however, you need to complete the Chapter 4 mission, Akkala Tower.

After doing so, a new collection of side activities will appear on the map, including Offering Help on the Road in the Gerudo Desert.

This quest will require you to donate 4,500 Rupees, but, in return, it allows you to qualify for the Trail of the Great Fairies.

Once your payment is made, three Fairy Fountain challenges will appear across the map, which you must complete to unlock the final Fairy Fountain challenge needed to unlock the Great Fairies.

Fairy Fountain: Deep Snow challenge in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity explained

The Fairy Fountain: Deep Snow challenge in Age of Calamity is located in the Hebra region and has a recommended level of 26.

It's important to note that out of all the Fairy Fountain challenges, this is the only one that doesn't include a time limit. Instead, you must defeat all five Ice Moblins before the Rito Captain flees.

You can easily keep an eye on the Rito Captain's health by looking at the health bar on your screen. A number of Blue Moblins will appear to target the Rito Captain during the challenge, so, when that happens, make sure you quickly defeat them.

Remember to protect the Rito Captain.

For yourself, you'll need to defeat the five Ice Moblins around the battlefield. Each one will be marked on your map and, depending one the level of your chosen character, won't take long to dispatch.

Once all five Ice Moblins are dead, collect the Rupees from the chest and head over to the Great Fairy bulb to begin your battle with Kaysa.

All of the Great Fairies battle in the same way, so, once you've defeated one, you'll find it easy to defeat the others. The trick is to stay out of range of their melee attacks by dodging out of the way, using their slow movement speed against them, and correctly use the Sheikah runes.

When you see Kaysa's weak-point, quickly attack, so you can cause some proper damage. You can also use the ice magic you'll have collected during this challenge to force Kaysa's weak-point to appear.

Soon enough, probably with a good amount of dodging, you'll defeat her.

When you first complete this challenge, you'll receive one Ethereal Stone, three Fairies and 10 Hearty Salmon.

Fairy Fountain: Desert Sands challenge in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity explained

The Fairy Fountain: Desert Sands challenge in Age of Calamity can be found in the Gerudo Desert region and has a recommended level of 28.

This challenge is divided into two parts and, in the first, you need to collect 600 rupees in under 13 minutes.

The best way to complete this challenge is to fight enough enemies to open all of the gates, so that you can reach the Stone Talus at the end of the battlefield. Defeating this Stone Talus will summon more Yiga forces to the map, allowing you to quickly collect all the rupees you need.

We suggest targeting the Yiga Blademasters first, as they drop 50 rupees each. Once you've dealt with them, you can focus on the Yiga Clan foot soldiers until you've reached the target.

Once you've collected 600 rupees, you need to defeat the Great Fairy Tera. Thankfully, due to how large she is and how slowly she moves, she is quite easy to defeat.

Since you're no longer under a time limit, you can take this battle at your own pace, avoiding her attacks, so that you can attack her weak-point. Simply focus on using your unique actions at the right time, knocking down her weak-point and using the correct Sheikah runes to defeat her.

The first time you complete this challenge, you'll receive one Ethereal Stone, three Fairies, 10 Raw Whole Birds and 500 Rupees.

Fairy Fountain: Grassy Plains challenge in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity explained

The Fairy Fountain: Grassy Plains challenge in Age of Calamity is located in Central Hyrule and has a recommended level of 25.

In this mission, you'll be given seven minutes to defeat a number of enemies and, out of the first three Fairy Fountain challenges, it's the hardest. For this reason, we recommend using your highest level character, as you'll want to ensure you're dealing as much damage as possible.

The first three enemies you'll face will be two Fire Moblin and one Ice Moblin. Despite being in the same area, these enemies are quite well spaced apart, so do your best to tackle them individually, rather than as a group.

The best way to do this is to tackle the first Fire Moblin that'll appear on your right, then the Ice Moblin and end with the last Fire Moblin. You'll also want to avoid using the magic rod power you'll earn by defeating these creatures.

Once you've defeated them, you'll have to collect the rupees from three nearby chests. Make sure you're not slow, as the timer will still be running!

The clock is still running when you open the chests.

In the next area, you'll find yourself facing a Red Hinox. Defeating this beast in such a short time limit might be a bit of a struggle, but there are a number of ways to force its weak-point gauge to appear.

Firstly, you'll notice that there are a number of Electric Chuchus in the nearby lake. If you defeat them, while the Hinox will be electrocuted, giving you the chance to destroy its weak-point gauge. Secondly, you can use the magic rod powers you collected in the previous area against the Hinox to, again, make its weak-point again.

Don 't forget that hitting the Hinox's eye will also reveal its weak-point.

After collecting the chests, you'll be able to face Cotera and, like the past Great Fairies, you'll want to follow the strategy of dodging her attacks to access her weak-point and using the Sheikah runes at the right time.

The only issue is that the area you fight Cotera in is quite small, so make sure you don't get stuck in a corner or less she'll be able to cause quite a lot of damage to you. Still, keep dodging and you'll defeat her eventually.

You'll receive one Ethereal Stone, three Fairies and 10 Raw Gourmet Meats the first time you complete this mission.

Fairy Fountain: Battlefield challenge in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity explained

The Fairy Fountain: Battlefield challenge is the final Fairy Fountain challenge in Age of Calamity and will only be accessible once you've completed the previous three.

With the first three Fairy Fountain challenges under your belt, you'll find Fairy Fountain: Battlefield in the Akkala region, with a recommended level of 29.

Before this challenge begins, we highly recommend you select your highest level character and select a meal that will boost their attack damage in some form. This challenge can be quite hard for lower level characters and you'll want to ensure you can attack as quickly, with as much damage, as you like.

Fairy Fountain: Battlefield is divided up into a series of time based battles against Moblins, with the now traditional battle against the Great Fairy at the end. Remember - the timer only resets after you've collected the rupees from the chest, so don't get distracted.

The trick to completing the first stage of this challenge is to head straight to the targeted Moblins and without being distracted by the other monsters. Once there, make sure you keep attacking and dodging, going for the weak-point whenever you get the chance.

It may seem tough, but, with a bit of determination, you'll be able to complete this challenge.

To give you an idea of what you'll be facing, we've listed which monsters you have to defeat and the associated time limits in order below:

  • Two Blue Moblins and rupees collected - 2 minutes
  • Black Moblin and rupees collected - 1 minute
  • Ice Moblin and rupees collected - 1 minute
  • Electric Moblin, Black Moblin and rupees collected - 1 minutes and 30 seconds

Once you've defeated all the Moblins, you'll fight the final Great Fairy - Mija. This battle is exactly the same as the previous Great Fairy battles, so follow the same tactics you've been previously using until she's down for the count.

After completing Fairy Fountain: Battlefield, you'll unlock the Great Fairies character (or characters...) and will be able to play as all four Great Fairies at once!

You'll also receive one Ethereal Stone, five Fairies and five Hearty Bass for completing this challenge.
