Coverage

14:04

Hello and welcome to Digital Foundry's coverage of the Nvidia GeForce Special Event! I'm Will Judd, the fifth Beatle of Digital Foundry, and I'm joined today by my #friendandcolleague Alex Battaglia.

14:14

Hello there people of the internet! I will be following the livestream here with my #friendandcolleague Will Judd! Hopefully posting meaningful insight alongside ticker-style bulletins.

15:21

Leolian says:

Anyone in the market for a kidney?

Let's hope that it won't be that expensive! Maybe you'll only have to pay a pound of flesh.

15:25

barchetta says:

I have 2 kids, xbox and PS literate, house trained and good for co-op FIFA, COD, Fortnite etc. Will swap for GTX 3080 or equivalent.

Seems like a good deal!

15:27

Cyclone says:

Wouldn't mind a reasonably priced 3050/3050 Ti. My 1050 Ti is getting a bit long in the tooth, and Cyberpunk 2077 is only two and a half months away.

It'll be interesting to see how Nvidia handle this! Normally we see mid-range and high-end cards first, but never say never...

15:28

JDSP says:

If they release a 2080ti equiv for £700-800 that will be the card I'll buy, I just need HDMI 2.1 a little uplift in perf for 4k 60

I'm waiting for HDMI 2.1 too! I need something to go along with my LG B9... cough cough https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-best-4k-tvs-for-hdr-gaming-7009

15:38

Fixxxer says:

Hopefully graphics card technology has moved on sufficiently that one of these cards will finally be a worthwhile upgrade from my GTX 570.But it's certainly not happened to date.

I think a lot of people are in the same boat! The GTX 970 was such a beast.

15:51

I also used to have a Titan X Maxwell before joining DF - pretty cool card.

15:57

Wow, a Titan X! Not bad Alex - I think the coolest GPU setup I had before joining DF was a pair of HD 6950s in Crossfire, which I bought with my first paycheck after getting a job! They didn't scale well, sadly, but it felt insane to run Battlefield 3 at 2560 by 1440!

16:02

tilmitderbrill says:

The real question is: Will we see Jensen pull out the line-up out of his oven in the kitchen?

If we don't get some more oven shots, we'll be soundly disappointed.

16:06

judderman1 says:

Are we expecting pricing today? What, historically do Nvidia say about price at these types of reveal?

Nice name, Judderman!

I think pricing today sounds likely - this isn't a console reveal, after all ;-)

16:12

judderman1 says:

Are we expecting pricing today? What, historically do Nvidia say about price at these types of reveal?

16:12

judderman1 says:

Are we expecting pricing today? What, historically do Nvidia say about price at these types of reveal?

16:12

judderman1 says:

Are we expecting pricing today? What, historically do Nvidia say about price at these types of reveal?

I would expect pricing

16:19

Alex is really excited about pricing.

16:30

rondn says:

Is something like this going to show up on your channel later in video form? Like with the console reveals etc?

We'll definitely have some video content, so stay tuned.

16:41

Balu2222 says:

What do you think about the 3x8-pin cards?

Great for those who want to do heavy overclocking and need stable power/high gain

16:48

Whoop, someone just moved the countdown text out of the way for a few seconds. It's really live, then. 12 minutes to go!

16:53

Just a few minutes here...

16:57

Hi everyone - I've been contributing to Eurogamer since 2007 and yet this is the first live text I've ever done. I'm really looking forwards to this one!

16:59

Leather Jacket or Baking Oven? Which one do we get?

17:01

The kitchen is back! As is the leather jacket.

17:02

tilmitderbrill says:

Sick nVidia Main theme!

the nv house band

17:02

Can I get an Inception horn when the perf boost is revealed?

17:03

Does that slide have RT reflections, Alex?

17:03

"Digital Foundry streams to put their heads in virtual toilets and gaze at the pixels inside."

17:04

John Linneman's most played game of 2018,2019, and 2020 getting RT!

17:04

RTX-enabled flossing. My word.

17:05

Finally, I can finally get out of Wood League in Valorant!

17:06

Ooooh, new displays. Neat.

17:07

Valorant is one of the few games that you really can probably get 360 fps in a rather stable way. Learning it was Unreal Engine 4... floored me.

17:08

I've got to admit, these RTX streaming apps are rather impressive. RTX Voice, I use it all the time. It's been a game changer for John and his oven-like office that requires full-on AC.

17:08

Finally, my collection of mechanical keyboards will finally be out of sight during Zoom meetings.

17:09

Are they using AI to blur that logo on the gaming chair?

17:09

There is some utility in that tracking feature for a 4K camera feed...

17:11

I am a big fan of the post-process motion blur it can manage :)

17:12

I hope we get RTX marbles as an .exe at some point.

17:13

Whoa that is incredibly cool. And creepy.

17:13

I always need more Vespene Gas.

17:14

Can we sort out a neural network to do the pixel counting? You've no idea what a time sink that is... :/

17:14

ML driven animation is gonna be a big thing in a few years I imagine. Offline maybe at first, but then real time.

17:16

Oh my, that's our name up there.

17:16

We've been tracking the progress of DLSS over the last couple of years and it's evolved into something very special. Death Stranding at 4K60 on an RTX 2060 is possible.

17:17

Interesting that Nvidia are referencing the benchmarks used by Microsoft in the Hot Chips presentation.

17:17

They just used the xbox metric there, RTX Turing in full form is 34 TFlops equivalent there. Very interesting.

17:18

OK, did everyone write down those numbers? We'll be testing you later!

17:18

Well, there it is. Nvidia got a lot of heat for investing in RT and tensor cores - and with Ampere they're literally doubling down on them.

17:18

RT being 58 equivalent TFs is huge. Big RT performance upgrade.

17:21

neilka says:

This Marbles Avengers game isn't what I was expecting

It sure is pretty, though.

17:22

This is the weirdest ASMR I've ever watched.

17:22

You've got to hand it to Nvidia - we need the software support of course, but there's an actual vision for next-gen graphics here.

17:23

I think Alex has passed out from ray overload.

17:23

This sounds an awful lot like what Microsoft were talking about...

17:24

So using that metric that MS made which NV quotes here: Xbox Series X is 13 equivalent TFs for Rt HW accelleration. Full turing is 34. Full Ampere is 58.

17:24

C Y B E R P U N K

17:24

Oh I am quaking - cyberpunk time

17:25

I need this trailer in 8K, stat

17:25

Is this the real next-gen killer app?

17:25

It's happening...!

17:26

Game on.

17:26

Snazzy.

17:26

17:26

19Gbps GDDR6 confirmed.

17:26

Structural sparsity - that is new

17:27

Some sort of real time ML thing, there was a patch being made for Wolfenstein Youngblood that referenced that I think!

17:27

dfunked09 says:

If 3080 is their flagship then what on earth is the 3090?...

Good question! I guess it's more like a Titan

17:28

Interesting that the focus is on 3080 when we know there's a 3090...

17:28

IT WAS BEHIND THE SPATULAS THE WHOLE TIME

17:28

lol that thing of spatulas

17:29

I'm loving the Star Trek-level techno-babble. Of course, nothing ever surpassed Lt Commander Data's multi-modal reflection sorting.

17:30

samjones says:

Best of Both Worlds

a great ep of TNG

17:30

Pricing, guys. Faster than 2080 Ti for $699.

17:30

$700. September 17th.

17:32

Well how about 499? That is... interesting

17:33

They are aiming for the pascal audience - which at this point in time might have had a GPU for around 4 years.

17:34

Sooooo, by extension is a prospective RTX 3060 as fast as RTX 2080? I've been using one of those a lot recently and it still has a ton to offer, especially in DLSS-enabled titles.

17:34

Looks like RT shadows here, perhaps reflections?

17:34

Wait - are we getting a 3090 reveal?

17:35

Been baking for a few years

17:35

It's T H I C C

17:35

"a silencer"
hahaha

17:35

Starting at 1499 as per that slide

17:36

8K. Get out of here, Nvidia.

17:37

Native 8k is dumb as heck. But reconstructed 8K makes a lot of sense. Now 8K TVs need to actually be good though

17:37

I'm guessing some kind of more intensive DLSS algorithm?

17:38

Damn, this means I gotta find a good 8K TV recommendation now...

17:38

I think 3090 is based on the same core processor as 3080 - so I'm kinda curious if the 3080 can also deliver that 8K experience.

17:38

21 years of GPU development - so much has happened.

17:38

Note: both Control and Youngblood feature DLSS 2.0, so no surprise that they're good candidates for 8K!

17:39

Can I get a special edition spatula as a pre-order bonus?

17:40

OK, with that supremely next-gen speech it looks like we're done!

17:40

Expect DF coverage... shortly.

17:41

We have specs, we have bold performance claims and crucially we have prices. The demos were impressive and they full feature support on what must surely be the year's biggest game. This next-gen battle just took on another interesting dimension.

17:42

A lot to digest here from the presentation: RT performance is a big deal, the HW accellerated support for Directstorage API bringing PC memory architecture closer to that found in next gen consoles (will RTX 2XXX support be there?), DLSS mentioned the entire time with NV pushing it hard.

17:42

StooMonster says:

Very impressive reveal.

17:43

jaju123 says:

Why is RDNA2 so missing in action?

This is an interesting question... I mean, I've seen RDNA2 silicon at Microsoft six months ago.

17:43

By that I mean Xbox Series X, of course.

17:45

NULL-PTR says:

@jaju123 Not as much missing in action but wasn't supposed to be launched until later this year. AMD clearly learned it's lesson to not just paper launch hardware and pretend that it's been launched proper.

Yup, and also the competitive landscape vs Nvidia means it makes sense to play your cards close to your chest.

17:48

Thanks for joining us everyone! We've just posted our recap of the event, so do check that out, and stay tuned for more coverage coming soon.

17:48

Thanks for watching everyone! So much to think about here!

With DLSS 2.0, the high-end ti's seem to be more about Nvidia vs AMD perf bragging rights.
    jwsg 4 weeks ago
The 3080 with a B550 M/B a Zen3 CPU and Gen4 SSD sounds a good system - but its hard to forget that the new consoles at 500-600 include CPU/GPU/SSD/RAM/MB/PSU/Case/4K Drive
    mecha-B 4 weeks ago
@NULL-PTRDLSS 2.0 seems negate the need for all that perf to do native 4k anyway I suppose. They seem to be concentrating on ray-tracing, but having to pay developers to implement.
    OnlyJoeKing 4 weeks ago
@NULL-PTR cheers. Wonder how good it would be without vs with....
    NULL-PTR 4 weeks ago
@OnlyJoeKing PCIe is backwards and forwards compatible so anything with a correct size PCIe slot and sufficient power delivery will work. However to get the most out of it you'll need a decent CPU and a motherboard with PCIe 4.0 slots.

I know there is inflation but Ti prices are insane.

No dates though and the classic vauge 3x or 4x performace in something

There is defo some nice room for a 3080 ti to slip in the with them prices . Looks like it will appear in a few months with a 1200 ish price.

I just realized something - they officially retired the Titan brand
    mecha-B 4 weeks ago
What happened to being able to get the top GPU for 600?
    NULL-PTR 4 weeks ago
@mecha-B I'd hardly call a 2-year-old GPU obsolete. May not be the latest and greatest, but perfectly usable. I say this as someone writing this on a machine still rocking original GTX Titans.
    OnlyJoeKing 4 weeks ago
Would love to understand whether you can just bang one of these in an existing PC... do you need a newish mobo/ram/cpu to get the best from it? A 3070 would be very tempting if not...

I probably go with a Rtx 3080 but still waiting to see big navi performance against the Rtx 3080 come on AMD show us what your cooking.

What do you think about the 3x8-pin cards?
    TinyKaiju 4 weeks ago
Greatest Nvidia card I ever owned was the Ti 4600. Upgraded from a Geforce 2 MX and it was an absolute beast. The FX 5700 that followed was a terrible disappointment but I needed the Shader 2.0 support.

It won't happen but God I'd love a release date and price on the 3060 or 3050 if it exists. I'm pulling together a parts list for Black Friday and it hurts me that I don't know what £300-ish card I could get...
    Fake_Blood 4 weeks ago
I bet this going to open with Gangsta's Paradise, then cuts to Jensen going "I'll tell you what's going on in the kitchen".
    imi87 4 weeks ago
    @BobbyDeNiro surely a 3080 should be able to handle 4K ?
    tilmitderbrill 4 weeks ago
Really curious how they will price the 8GB 3070.. and if they do Super refreshes after one year, like they did with the 20x0
    Fake_Blood 4 weeks ago
I hope Nvidia starts making tech demos again. That was like one of the coolest things when you got a new card back in the day. I especially remember the ATi glass spheres demo.
    judderman1 4 weeks ago
No probs Will Judderman. :) If a 3090 was £1200 I would be almost pleased with that. If it's £1500 there would be sad face emojis used. I'll still get it though. If it has 24Gb that's a big upgrade on my rtx 2060 (I'm a casual gamer, more focused on using it for work - I know! :)

Some people expecting 2x or even 4x RT performance, but I don't think that's realistic. Most people don't know but the slowest part of RT is still the shading, the ray-triangle intersection is already pretty fast with the Turing cores.
    tilmitderbrill 4 weeks ago
@onibirdo Really hoping they dont increase the prices of the 70series again. The 1070 was such a great deal back in the days... I hope the 3070 will do the same!
    onibirdo 4 weeks ago
I'm curious as to whether the RTX 3070 will be the new RTX 2060, price- and specwise compared to its bigger brothers.
    Fake_Blood 4 weeks ago
I still have an 1080ti which I bought on launch in 2017, just before the crypto craze really started. I'm going to need something faster to run FS2020 in VR though.
    tilmitderbrill 4 weeks ago
The real question is: Will we see Jensen pull out the line-up out of his oven in the kitchen?
    FMV-GAMER 4 weeks ago
Yes the Titan X Maxwell has done me well the last 5/6 years and still plays most games at max settings 60fps at 1440p resolution. I am upgrading to the 3090, what card you getting Alex
    FelixAndrews 4 weeks ago
I'd love it if these new cards weren't ludicrously priced, but that doesn't seem to be the way the wind's blowing. I suspect my 1080 is still going to be in service for a few years yet.
    FMV-GAMER 4 weeks ago
Fixxxer I am hoping the 3090 will last me as long as the Titan X Maxwell has lasted me while playing modern games at 60fps with higher than new console settings
    Jonamok 4 weeks ago
Has everyone decided which of their kidneys they're going to sell yet?
    FMV-GAMER 4 weeks ago
My Titan X Maxwell has served me well the last 5/6 years so I will be upgrading and looking at the 3090 as I don't want to upgrade to a new GPU with less VRAM than I already have
    Fixxxer 4 weeks ago
FMV-GAMER - Well, 1080p,but obviously I choose what games I play on my ancient card very carefully. I've got £225 in my graphics card savings account so this generation may come too early... As an actual point though, for anyone looking to get the new consoles this generation seems a dangerous one for long-term value as it probably won't be able to keep up with the consoles for the next 8/10 years. The generation after this seems to me the one to wait for if you can
    imi87 4 weeks ago
@neilka at least they have finally adopted hdmi 2.1Should mean more monitors packing the latest standard.
    tilmitderbrill 4 weeks ago
I really hope that the RTX 3070 = 2080TI rumours are true... May we all keep our kidneys though. DLSS2.1 will be interesting to see aswell. Maybe we can use it in TAA games on a driver level?
    Ryuke 4 weeks ago
I have every part of my new build sat waiting for a shiny new GPU before I put it all together. I REALLY don't want to shell out for a 2080ti at this point in time so would welcome an equivalent from the 30 series at a better price point.
    FMV-GAMER 4 weeks ago
What settings and resolution you running at on a GTX570 Fixxxer
    Fixxxer 4 weeks ago
Hopefully graphics card technology has moved on sufficiently that one of these cards will finally be a worthwhile upgrade from my GTX 570.But it's certainly not happened to date.
    FMV-GAMER 4 weeks ago
What kind of performance upgrade do we expect going from 2080ti to 3090 and 2080 to 3080?
    neilka 4 weeks ago
Asus have jumped the gun a bit, 3090/3080/3070 all available this month: https://videocardz.com/press-release/asus-announces-geforce-rtx-30-series
    FMV-GAMER 4 weeks ago
So how many are buying a new 3000 series GPU then?
    blarts 4 weeks ago
My biggest hope is that Nvidia won't wallet gouge, although I rather doubt it. I have my 1080, and might go up to a 3080 in a few months if the price and performance difference is worth it
    JDSP 4 weeks ago
If they release a 2080ti equiv for £700-800 that will be the card I'll buy, I just need HDMI 2.1 a little uplift in perf for 4k 60

I've been postponing building a brand new pc for this so hopefully they'll announce pricing and everything. A 500-600 euros card (like the RTX 2070 is priced now) would be very nice.

Wouldn't mind a reasonably priced 3050/3050 Ti. My 1050 Ti is getting a bit long in the tooth, and Cyberpunk 2077 is only two and a half months away.

This is the first time since the 460 that I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford a top end GPU on release. The hype is real. Been struggling with my 1070 at 2K which is still a great card, but not quite able to handle the resolution workload.
