Input lag issues fixed on PS4 Rise of the Tomb Raider

Patch 1.04 improves gameplay, optimises PS4 Pro performance.

When Rise of the Tomb Raider hit the PlayStation 4 earlier this month we were pleased to discover a number of enhancements over the previous console iterations of the game. Unfortunately, there was one bugbear that ultimately limited the game's potential - input latency. The original Xbox One release suffered from a large dead zone and noticeable input lag during gameplay and the brand new PlayStation 4 version exhibited the very same problem.

As of version 1.04, however, this is no longer the case on the PS4 version. Developer Nixxes has heard our plea and completely eliminated the issue bringing the PS4 version in line with the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game, neither of which suffer from this issue. It's revelatory change that greatly improves the game's combat by allowing players to more accurately aim its selection of precision weaponry. We had no issue pulling off headshots in version 1.04 versus our original experience which made the game much more difficult to play.

When the patch was initially released some users did report new crashes resulting in an error code CE-34878-0 but it appears that the problem was tied into network issues. If you still run into this error, disabling the network connection will solve it, but by this point, it really shouldn't be a problem. We didn't run into any crashes while testing version 1.04.

Curious to see how the PS4 version stacks up against the Xbox One original? Check out this video. Just remember that the input latency is no longer a concern!

Improved input latency isn't the only improvement on offer either, the patch also boasts additional "improvements to 4K image quality and frame-rate for PS4 Pro" in addition to various bug fixes. We certainly can't test the new PS4 Pro features but, just as with Deus Ex Mankind Divided, it seems that Rise of the Tomb Raider is ready to go when the new console is released.

So if you've been itching to play Rise of the Tomb Raider and were holding off due to input latency concerns, you can rest easy. The game plays every bit as well as the PC and Xbox 360 ports of the game while offering slight visual improvements over the Xbox One original. Nixxes is responsible for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS4 versions of the game while the original was created entirely by Crystal Dynamics itself and there is no report of a similar fix for Xbox One.

Digital Foundry specialises in technical analysis of gaming hardware and software, using state-of-the-art capture systems and bespoke software to show you how well games and hardware run, visualising precisely what they're capable of. In order to show you what 4K gaming actually looks like we needed to build our own platform to supply high quality 4K video for offline viewing. So we did.

Our videos are multi-gigabyte files and we've chosen a high quality provider to ensure fast downloads. However, that bandwidth isn't free and so we charge a small monthly subscription fee of €5. We think it's a small price to pay for unlimited access to top-tier quality encodes of our content. Thank you.
