The XM4 is the starting assault rifle in Black Ops Cold War, and now it's made the transition to Call of Duty: Warzone as part of the debut season one.
The XM4 is an all-purpose assault rifle, deadly up close and personal and accurate from afar.
It might be the base assault rifle, but don't let this dissuade you from using the XM4. Having spent copious hours with the weapon in Black Ops Cold War, it's safe to say it's a multi-purpose weapon, excellent pinpoint enemies from a distance (which is what you'll be doing plenty of on the Verdansk map), and tearing through body armor up close.
In this explainer to the XM4 Warzone, we'll take you through everything you need to know about the assault rifle, including the best XM4 loadouts to create the best XM4 class recommendation, and more.

As well as our overall best Warzone weapons choices, if you're looking for other loadout recommendations, we have pages on the AUG, Krig 6, MP5 and M16, and for owners of the latest Call of Duty game, our picks for the best guns in Black Ops: Cold War.
How to unlock the XM4 in Warzone
Thankfully, the XM4 is unlocked from the very second you boot up Call of Duty: Warzone. There's no grinding required to unlock the assault rifle, because it's available as the base assault rifle in the crossover between Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.
It's a similar situation in Treyarch's new game. You'll unlock the XM4 as soon as you start playing Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer mode, so it makes sense that you'd also unlock the weapon instantly in Warzone, too.
Best XM4 loadout and attachments in Warzone
Just below, you can check out our comprehensive list of the best attachments to equip to the XM4 to get the most out of the weapon, as well as the corresponding levels at which said attachments unlock.
- 13.7" Takedown (Unlocks at level 39)
- Sillix Holoscout (Unlocks at level 27)
- Buffer Tube (Unlocks at level 36)
- SASR Jungle Grip (Unlocks at level 35)
- Field Agent Grip (Unlocks at level 41)
Firstly, you'll want to equip the 13.7" Takedown on the barrel of the XM4, to increase effective damage range with a minimal penalty to sprinting movement speed. Next, we prefer the Sillix Holoscout on the optics category for the XM4, but the Kobra Red Dot is a great secondary choice if you haven't unlocked the Holoscout.
For the stock of the XM4, we really like the Buffer Tube, due to its big bonus for sprint to fire time, excellent for engaging enemies in relatively close quarters. For the Rear Grip category, you'll want to go with the SASR Jungle Grip, which gives a nice bonus to both aim down sight time and flinch resistance, well worth it for the sacrifice in sprint to fire time.
Finally, we like the Field Agent Grip for the Underbarrel slot on the XM4. Although it does penalise shooting movement speed somewhat, it gives a nice bonus to both horizontal and vertical recoil control, perfect for pinpointing enemies from relatively far off.

Best XM4 class set up in Warzone
As with the list above, you can find a full list of the best equipment items to equip alongside the XM4 in your custom Warzone class.
- Perk 1: Kill Chain (Unlocks at level 34)
- Perk 2: Ghost (Unlocks at level 24)
- Perk 3: Tracker (Unlocks at level 51)
- Secondary: RPG-7 (Unlocks at level 1)
- Tactical: Heartbeat Sensor (Unlocks at level 30)
- Lethal: Claymore (Unlocks at level 1)
For your Perks, we'd recommend going with Kill Chain to increase your chances of finding a Killstreak in a Supply Box, and Ghost, to hide yourself from enemy radar pings and heartbeat sensors. Finally, Tracker is a solid option for Perk 3, letting you pinpoint enemy locations via their footprints, and hiding enemy death symbols from their allies.
For your secondary weapon to compliment the XM4, we'd recommend the RPG-7 due to its devastating impact power. If you'd prefer a launcher that locks on to targets for damage against Killstreaks, then the JOKR is a solid pick.
Rounding out the equipment is the Heartbeat Sensor, perfect for pinpointing nearby enemy locations, and the Claymore, excellent for defending against specific points against aggressive enemy players.
