Sony apologises for PS5 pre-order chaos
Promises more will be made available soon.
Sony has apologised for the chaos caused by PlayStation 5 pre-orders this week.
"Let's be honest: PS5 pre-orders could have been a lot smoother," Sony said in a tweet on the official PlayStation account. "We truly apologise for that.
"Over the next few days, we will release more PS5 consoles for preorder - retailers will share more details.
"And more PS5s will be available through the end of the year."
Sony came under fire this week after pre-orders for the PS5 went live on Wednesday night UK time - before they were officially announced.
In August, Sony said it wouldn't surprise-reveal PS5 pre-orders. "I think it's safe to say, we'll let you know when pre-orders will happen," PlayStation worldwide marketing head, Eric Lempel said.
"It's not going to happen with a minute's notice. We're going to at some point let you know when you can pre-order a PS5 so please don't feel like you have to go run and line up anywhere until you receive official notice on how that will work."
But shortly after Sony's PS5 showcase ended, pre-orders opened up at select retailers, and fans scrambled to put their money down. The demand caused chaos online. As Eurogamer reported earlier today: "As retailer websites wobbled under the pressure of the online horde, the victorious took to social media to celebrate, while the defeated were left deflated, hoping for better luck in the coming weeks.
"Now, just a few days later, the next step in the console pre-order dance has been taken: concern over cancelled pre-orders, retailer warnings about delivering on launch day, and scalpers laughing all the way to the bank."
Sony's tweet suggests shops will make more PS5s available to pre-order in the next week, which will be welcome for those hoping to snag one of the coveted consoles. But will there be enough stock to go round?
