There's a new The Lord of the Rings game in the works

Nan'...

Warner Bros. and NetEase have announced a new The Lord of the Rings mobile game.

The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War is based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, as opposed to the Peter Jackson movies. It's set in the Third Age of Middle-earth, and "will recreate the fictional world of Arda in a visually stunning and completely faithful rendition, with iconic characters and locations from the original trilogy".

There's no detail on what kind of game this is, or how it will play, unfortunately. There's an image depicting a Sauron army attack on Minas Tirith, but it doesn't tell us much.

NetEase is a Chinese company that has made significant inroads in western video game development in recent years. It works with Blizzard to operate the likes of World of Warcraft in China, is developing mobile game Diablo Immortal, and in 2018 invested $100m in Destiny developer Bungie for a minority stake in the company.
