Assassin's Creed Valhalla season pass unlocks Beowulf mission

And you'll "explore new countries" too.

We're still yet to see proper Assassin's Creed Valhalla gameplay, but there's already word on the game's season pass via Ubisoft's German store listing.

Specifically, the season pass will unlock a mission surrounding the legendary Beowulf - in which Valhalla main character Eivor will "discover the cruel truth behind the legend".

The story of Beowulf, of course, is told in the Old English epic poem of the same name (and also in a terrible CGI film with Angelina Jolie). Beowulf is the hero, who goes to slay a monster but then cops it a few years later trying to defeat a dragon. (At more than 3000 lines, the poem's words drag on also.)

It'll be interesting to see the Assassin's Creed take on all that.

This is the second exclusive mission for the game, following the vague mention of a quest named "The Way of the Beserker", which you get if you pre-order.

(It's worth noting Assassin's Creed Odyssey had similar pre-order exclusives, which eventually became available to everyone else down the line.)

It sounds like this Beowulf mission is a one-off bonus, and not part of the season pass' main narrative - though we've asked Ubisoft for clarification. Otherwise, the season pass' description says it will take you to "new countries".

Speaking to Eurogamer ahead of the game's announcement, Assassin's Creed Valhalla lead producer Julien Laferrière told me the main game would mostly take place in Norway and England, but that a "few surprise areas" would also feature.

Valhalla debuted via a flashy CGI trailer and an intriguing set of new gameplay details, such as the first word on the game's new English Settlement hub, which will reshape the flow of the game.

Then, last Thursday, we saw a little more of the game, which looked lovely, sure, but it was not the gameplay footage many were expecting.

In a tweet following the latest footage's reveal, Valhalla creative director Ashraf Ismail levelled with fans on Twitter, saying they had "rightfully expected to see more".

"We have a long marketing campaign ahead of us, you will see in-depth gameplay and get a lot more info about the game," he wrote. Thank you for your excitement and passion! Be patient with us and be kind. It will be worth it!"
