Our complete walkthrough for Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Route 2 and Professor Magnolia's house are your next stops, and follow on from Wedgehurst and the Pokémon Lab in your quest through Pokémon Sword and Shield's main story.

On each page of our walkthrough like this, we'll cover any and all of the obtainable Pokémon, item locations, trainers and their teams that you might come across here, as well as walking you through any key steps of the story, puzzles or challenges along the way.

Where applicable, note that our walkthrough pages will be down into separate sections referring to each of your visits to a given location, seeing as you often backtrack or revisit various places in your quest to become Galar League Champion. And of course if there are any, we'll clearly mark any spoilers, too!

Pokémon Sword and Shield: Route 2

Route 2 is a nice and gentle route leading north-east out of the village of Wedgehurst, towards a dead end at Professor Magnolia's house by the lake.

On the route, you'll learn how to catch Pokémon with the Champion Leon - but only if you haven't caught some already! The tutorial is skipped if you've already bagged one with the Poké Balls your mum packed for you.

Leon gives you a pack of 20 either way, which is nice of him, and then it's down to you. Head down the hill and learn the basics of how wild encounters work, until you reach the house by the lake.

Pokémon Sword and Shield: Professor Magnolia's house

At the Professor's house, you'll meet Hop, Leon and the professor herself, Magnolia. After a brief chat inside, head out the front for another battle with Hop, after which you'll gain a letter of endorsement from Leon, endorsing you for the Gym Challenge itself.

Then, two Wishing Stars will drop out of the sky! These are what you need in order for your Pokémon to be able to Dynamax. Sonia will turn up and whip you both up a curry, and soon after you'll get a Dynamax Band - the actual item made from those Wishing Stars, that lets you Dynamax your pokes.

Hop reminds you that you can move slowly to sneak past Pokémon, and whistle, by pressing the left stick, to attract them.

Note that there lake itself is accessible - but only once you gain the ability to ride your bike on water, which won't be for a while yet! When you can, come back and collect some more Pokémon and items. We've marked the post-Rotom-surf items down below.

Your next objective is to head to Wedgehurst Station, back in the town before, where Hop will give you TM40 Swift as a little present. Time to get the train to Motostoke! You mum will turn up to give you a set of Camping Gear before you go - you can now use Pokémon Camp, where it's available - and you're off!

But wait! Something blocks the tracks, so your next stop isn't Motostoke just yet... it's the Wild Area!

That's everything here for now, so continue on to the Wild Area for the next steps in your quest, or cycle back to our main Pokémon Sword and Shield walkthrough and guide hub for all the other pages we have like this.
