Luigi's Mansion 3 is Nintendo Switch's biggest launch this year

Hoover have thought.

Mario's little brother has gone and grabbed the biggest Nintendo Switch launch of 2019 - bigger than Super Mario Maker 2 and Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Luigi's Mansion 3 arrived second in the chart this week behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but is unmistakably a success for Nintendo.

Launch week physical sales are more than double those of 3DS predecessor Luigi's Mansion 2 - and that's not counting Nintendo's now healthy split of digital sales detailed by the company to investors last week.

One caveat to Luigi's Mansion 3 sales is it had one extra day on sale versus Mario Maker 2 and Link's Awakening, as it launched to coincide with Halloween on Thursday, rather than the traditional Friday release. But there's no doubting the game's quality.

"This third entry feels more like Luigi has left the haunted house and gained free reign around the neighbouring theme park," Eurogamer's lovely Tom Phillips wrote in our Luigi's Mansion 3 review. "But what a theme park."

The only Switch games likely to trouble Luigi's sales record this year (and, to be honest, they will likely overtake him) are Pokémon Sword and Shield, due later this month.
