Apex Legends finally reveals Season 3 start date, official details on Crypto

Time for a Meltdown.

Respawn has announced Apex Legends Season 3: Meltdown will kick off on 1st October, bringing the new Legend, a new battle pass and Series 2 of Ranked play.

It looks like the leaks we've seen so far were accurate. The next Legend will indeed be Crypto and the new season will add in a brand new weapon - the charge rifle - both of which were leaked at a GameStop conference last month.

As expected from datamines, Crypto's abilities will involve deploying "specialised surveillance drones to stay in the fight and out of the spotlight". Respawn has also provided a lore trailer for the character, as part of the 'Stories from the Outlands' series to give a bit of background on some of the Legends.

In the trailer we see Crypto before he became an Apex Legend, discovering a way to predict the outcomes of Apex matches - inevitably bad things happen and he ends up on the run, though none of his lore so far explains why some players found him hacking terminals in the Labs area of the arena this week.

The name for the new season, Meltdown, suggests that whatever Crypto was doing, he's been successful. Perhaps we'll see some even bigger map changes in the near future, or maybe some new hidden areas in Kings Canyon, like the one introduced for Wraith's event.

Shortly after the reveal, EA tweeted this:

Here's hoping this is just EA's attempt to be funny, and doesn't mean Crypto will be locked behind some sort of paywall - you'd have thought the company learned a lesson about that already.

The Apex website states there's "more to be revealed before Meltdown begins", so we'll keep you up to date when more details are announced.
