Control - A Good Defence, unlocking the Shield power

A good defence is a good offence.

A Good Defence is a side mission in Control that unlocks a very useful power - Shield.

Like its name suggests, Shield lets you surround yourself with a collection of rubble, which blocks incoming Hiss attacks.

To uncover this new Object of Power, you must return to the Maintenance Sector and visit the Field Training to undertake one of the greatest challenges humankind has ever faced - timed exercise courses.

How to start A Good Defence in Control

To begin A Good Defence, you need to find the Research & Records - Research - Home Safe Tests collectable.

To find Home Safe Test, head to Central Maintenance by taking the Sector Elevator to the Maintenance Sector. Once you're there, go through the door on the left to Black Rock Processing.

The collectable is in the room beyond the security checks.

You'll find yourself in a room with two security checks and a windowed room behind them. Follow the corridor around until you reach this room. You'll find Home Safe Test on the counter inside.

Once you have it, head back to Central Maintenance.

Investigate the Training Course in Control

In Central Maintenance, you'll notice that the doorway to Field Training is blocked off by the Hiss. There are also small red Hiss blocks around the room.

You need to destroy these red blocks if you want to remove the Hiss barrier. The red blocks can be found:

  • Behind a plant next to the stairs leading to the Sector Elevator
  • Attached to the pillar in the middle of Central Maintenance
  • On left speaker above the door to Field Training
The locations of the three red blocks.

Once you've destroyed these blocks, the barrier in front of Field Training will disappear, allowing you to enter.

Head down the corridor and go through the metal detector.

Collectables to be found:

  • Correspondence - Official - Field Training Actor Complaint
    • (In the small office to the left when you enter Field Training.)

Complete the Training Course in the required time in Control

When you enter the Training Course a set of instructions will begin to play. Follow them and press the red button in front of you.

The Training Course will begin once the overhead voice finishes counting down. You will have 60 seconds to complete the course, with the recording regularly reminding you how much time you have left.

In the first room you need to simply shoot one target and, in the second, you need to shoot four.

Shoot the targets to advance through the first two rooms.

Quickly solve the third room by using your Launch power to place an orange electricity box on the nearby socket.

The next room is completed the same way, but this time there are two sockets. One is on the far wall and the other is on the right-hand side directly opposite you when you enter the room.

There is one socket on the right-hand wall as you enter and another on the far left.

The fifth room involves shooting another three targets.

This is followed by another electricity box puzzle in the sixth room. In here you must use your Launch powers to place an electricity box either side of the door to open it and create a set of stairs for Jesse to climb.

Room number is seven is pretty easy - quickly run around the walls that rise up from the ground and go through the door at the end of the corridor.

Finally, head through the passageway on the right-hand side.

Entering this chamber will bring you to the end of the course and the Object of Power.

Don't worry if it take you a couple of times to complete the course. There is no plenty other than having to repeat the course.

Cleanse the Safe Object of Power in Control

It's impossible to not notice the Safe Object of Power in the central room of the Training Course. It glows the typical Object of Power red and is shielding itself with a collection of rubble.

You can break this shield by throwing items using your Launch powers. When you see an opening in the shield, run up and cleanse the Safe Object of Power.

Before you do this, however, you might want to open the chest you can find on the upper floor of this room.

How to complete the Shield tutorial in Control

Cleansing the Object of Power will take you back to the Astral Plane.

This version of the Astral Plane is populated with gold enemies that are immune to your attacks, so don't bother attacking them.

To complete this challenge, you simply need to raise your Shield and follow the pathway, until you reach the line of floating grey cubes that will return you to reality.

Every so often you will need to lower your Shield, so that you can climb a wall.

Your Shield might also be destroyed by enemy fire or when you run out of energy. If this does happen, run until you have enough energy to raise your Shield again.

Upon returning to the Bureau, you'll be given a great opportunity to experiment with your new shield as a group of Hiss soldiers will arrive and attack you.

Defeat them and you can continue exploring the Federal Bureau of Control.
