Fortnite Season 9 map and confirmed map changes

Fortnite sees strange occurrences in the lead up to a new season, and though Season 9's build up had been quieter than previous seasons - compared to say Season 4's comet, Season 5's rift and Season 6's giant purple cube - there's still a big shake up to the map itself. Here's a look at it:

Fortnite season 9 map.

Here's the Season 9 map changes, based on the latest Fortnite patch notes and what we've learned from Season 9 so far:

Neo Tiled, Mega Mall and Pressure Plant

Two new locations have replaced Tilted Towers and Retail Row - Neo Tilted and Mega Mall.

There's also the Pressure Plant, which has sprung up as a new facility on the volcano.

Here's a peak at some official imagery:

How did this come to be? It was thanks to the volcano, which has laid mostly dormant for all of Season 8 until the Unvaulting event.

The end of Season 8's Unvaulting event saw the conclusion of the runes puzzle, which had appeared all over the map in the latter half of the season.

It resulted in a Vault in Loot Lake opening up, allowing players to pick one weapon, item or vehicle from the Vault (the term used for objects withdrawn from previous seasons) to re-enter the game.

After that, the volcano erupted, destroying part of Retail Row, and much of Tilted Towers:

That's the end of Tilted, then.

Other Season 9 Map changes - Slipstreams, vehicles and more

The other changes to the Fortnite map in Season 9 are a bit more general and evironmental.

There are now new objects called Slipstreams, which seem to replace things like ziplines as the new speedy, fixed-position ways of getting around the map. As explained in the Fortnite patch notes, these tunnels of wind passively carry players down the stream.

You can move faster and change direction when actively trying to move down the Stream, use directional input to gain extra velocity, and experiment with "bobbing up and down" for higher speeds. You're launched when exiting the tube based on your movement speed and exit angle, and both projectiles and vehicles can enter Slipstreams, too!

There's a new kind of collectible, called Fortbytes, too. We have a dedicated page on Fortbyte locations up and running if you want to dive into more on that.

Fortnite Season 9 Battle Pass cost and Battle Pass rewards list

Like Season 8 before it, Season 9 offers an array of new rewards, most of which are locked behind Battle Pass ownership.

While you can unlock a select number of the above with a Free Pass, it's only with a Battle Pass that a second tier of elusive rewards are unlocked.

The Battle Pass is a premium item, and again costs 950 V-Bucks. You can buy a bundle of 1,000 V-Bucks for around Ł8 / $10, or earn V-Bucks in game through a variety of activities.

Here's a list of what's included with the premium option of the Season 9 Battle Pass bundle:

  • Rox progressive skin
  • Sentinel skin
  • Bunker Jonesy skin
  • Sentinel wrap
  • Ripe Rippers harvesting tool
  • Turbo Spin glider
  • Ripe wrap
  • 300 V-Bucks
  • 1 Music Track
  • 70% Bonus Season Match XP
  • 20% Bonus Season Friend Match XP

The Season 9 Battle Pass otherwise includes the following unlocked instantly with the standard version:

And the much more to unlock over the course of the season - including a new Victory Umbrella.

These Challenges are introduced weekly, ranging from performing certain types of activities or finding hidden objects on the map, and completing them helps you rank up your Battle Pass easier, give you those rewards faster.

Both these Battle Pass Challenges and rewards can be unlocked at your leisure throughout the season, but once a new Season begins, your progress resets, and a new set of rewards and rankings will begin.
