Final Fantasy 12 - Catoblepas location, requirements and strategies for the Rank VI Paying for the Past

How to take on Catoblepas in Final Fantasy 12.

Here on this page of our Final Fantasy 12 Hunts and Marks guide, we'll be taking you through everything you need to know in order to defeat Catoblepas - a Rank VI Mark for the Paying for the Past Hunt - including the Petitioner and Mark's locations, the Hunt requirements, and strategies for the battle itself.

If you're looking for one of the other Marks however, you can head back to our Final Fantasy 12 Hunts and Marks locations, requirements and strategies hub. For other tips and explainers meanwhile, head to our Final Fantasy 12 The Zodiac Age guide and walkthrough, where we cover plenty more.

Catoblepas Mark and the Paying for the Past Hunt location and requirements

Before you get to the actual battle, here's everything you need to know about Catoblepas and the Paying for the Past Hunt:

  • Prerequisites: Get the Treaty Blade during the story.
  • Recommended level: 50
  • Petitioner location: Jahara, Lull of the Land
  • Mark location: Zertinan Caverns, Hourglass Basin
  • Reward: 3200 Gil, Volcano, Arctic Wind

War-Chief Supinelu is off to the left after crossing the bridge into Jahara. He's another petitioner who doesn't really have anything helpful to say, so to find the mark you'll need to enter Zertinan Caverns from the Shimmering Horizons in the Dalmasca Westersand. Make your way into Sandfalls, head south and push the boulder out of the way in Hourglass Basin if you need to, then exit to the south into The Undershore. Follow the path round behind the save crystal and you'll find a path not marked on the map which will lead you to your destination.

Catoblepas strategies and how to defeat it

Supinelu will suddenly show up - don't worry if he dies during the fight as it's only a temporary condition, and frankly he's not a great deal of help. Just in front of your target is a trap, but you might as well set it off now as it's inevitable you'll back into it at some point during the fight.

Open the fight with Dispel, and keep an eye on him as he'll keep giving himself Haste and Protect during the fight so you'll need to regularly remove them. He can hit for 3000+ HP so Bubble and Protect on your party is a good plan, and using Blind on the enemy really reduces his threat level. Stick to physical or Holy attacks, and this should be a fairly simple fight - he's tough, but there are no real surprises.
