Sekiro Chained Ogre fight - how to beat and kill the Ogre with fire

How to beat the Chained Ogre boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Chained Ogre is, for some, the first boss in Sekiro, found in the game's Ashina Outskirts area, following on from either General Naomori Kawarada or Juzou the Drunkard and Lady Butterfly in our walkthrough of the game's bosses and mini-bosses, depending on when you decided to visit the Hirata Estate location.

You'll find the Chained Ogre boss chained up - unsurprisingly - almost immediately after the Ashina Outskirts Wall - Stairway Sculptor's Idol.

Below, we'll cover how to beat and kill Sekiro's Chained Ogre, including any particularly strong methods or weaknesses they might have - fire being one of them - and any handy things to bear in mind.

Sekiro Chained Ogre fight - how to beat and kill the Chained Ogre with fire

If the Chained Ogre is the first full boss you've come up against, having missed or decided against visiting the Hirata Estate memory area (take the bell charm from the blind lady you spoke to shortly before finding this Ogre back to the Dilapidated Temple and show it to the golden Buddha inside to get there, if you didn't know!), then it'll probably seem insurmountably tough.

Thankfully, there are some reliable and relatively simple methods you can use to make your fight against the Ogre considerably easier.

How to beat the Chained Ogre - and how to use Fire to do it:

Approaching the Chained Ogre you'll have a chance to eavesdrop on two grunts. They'll mention the fact that fire, in particular, seems to be a pretty good weapon of choice for it - but how do you use fire against the Ogre?

The answer is your Prosthetic - specifically the Flame Vent Prosthetic Tool, which acts as a short-range, short burst flamethrower. Throw Oil - a commonly-found quick item - at an enemy when you're locked onto them and then when you're close enough and safe enough to do so, use your Flame Vent Prosthetic to blast them with fire and set them ablaze for longer than usual, thanks to that Oil you just soaked them with.

If you haven't already got it, the Flame Vent Prosthetic Tool is found in the Hirate Estate area - we mentioned how to get there above using that bell charm - so if you want to make this boss battle against the Ogre a lot easier we recommend a quick detour to get it. Specifically it's in a campfire by the Estate Path Sculptor's Idol there, fairly early on in the area.

When he's on fire, the Ogre will take a small amount of Vitality damage, but more importantly he'll be stunned for several seconds. Use it to get a good four or five hits off on him before you back off again in battle.

Fire or no fire though, there are a few other things to bear in mind when fighting the Chained Ogre.

  • You can backstab the Ogre for the first of his two Deathblow marks. You can't do it in stealth, but once he sees you quickly sprint behind him before he breaks free for the backstab!
  • Alternatively, you can land several hits while he's still chained up, and even prepare him to be set on fire by chucking Oil at him. Wait for him to break free and then instantly hit him with the Flame Vent to stun him and again free him up for another handful of hits.
  • The Ogre does a lot of throwing you about - if you get thrown off the nearby cliff edge, don't give up! Try and mash the grapple button and look back towards safe land and there are several tree branches and ledges you can grapple to in order to recover and avoid dying entirely!
  • He's quite easy to bait into a big attack that leaves him overcommitted - his Perilous Grab attack, his drop kick and another lunging grab. Stand a medium distance away, wait for him to commit, and then jump up, back and to the side to avoid it. Get in several hits while he's down and then back off again.
This symbol is basically an invitation to do damage. Be ready to press L2/LT to grapple to him and land a few high-damage hits before backing away again.
  • Fighting the Chained Ogre is about space management most of the time. If you get cornered you're in trouble, but if you're far enougha way, you can bait him into attacking and missing. Whenever you get backed into a corner, use one of the many grapple points nearby to avoid him and reposition the other side of him, then slowly back off to bait more attacks, dodge, hit him a bit and repeat.
  • When the ogre lunges for Grab attacks, he'll have a green grapple symbol above his head - use it! Quickly grapple to him and mash the attack button for a nice spinning air attack that'll do decent damage to both his Vitality and Posture.
  • Even his dropkick attack is deflectable - it's easy to dodge and you get some free hits in when he misses, but you'll do more Posture damage - and make him vulnerable to a Deathblow faster in the process - if you learn to deflect it with good timing. Staying calm and deflecting big, scary attacks is a great skill to master this early on, too, so with such a close Sculptor's Idol for retrying this battle quickly, it's probably worth a few deaths to practise that and get it right.
  • If you can't beat the Ogre, you can actually run straight past him - just sprint away and hide on the other side and you'll eventually lose his aggro and you can continue onwards. We recommend you beat him for the practise and the Prayer Bead, though!
The Chained Ogre's drop kick attack looks scary, but it's easy enough to dodge and leaves him very exposed to your follow-up attacks.

That's all you'll hopefully need for tackling this encounter, and for now that's all for our in-progress, quickly-expanding guide.
