BBC iPlayer for Xbox 360 shutdown date detailed

Casualty.

You'll soon no longer be able to watch BBC iPlayer from your Xbox 360.

Support will be withdrawn from 27th March 2019, a new message visible within the app states.

It will be seven years - almost exactly to the day - since iPlayer for Xbox 360 first launched.

Log on to the app now and you'll see this message.

If you can remember that far back, the arrival of iPlayer on Xbox 360 was a big thing. At the time, Microsoft locked all apps behind an Xbox Live Gold paywall - something which seems faintly ridiculous today.

iPlayer, which is funded by public money here in the UK, had to be an exception to ensure it did not break BBC rules. And so for a while, PlayStation 3 had iPlayer but Xbox 360 did not.

When it did arrive, on 20th March 2012, it was notable for using the Xbox 360's recent "Metro" user interface redesign and came with Kinect support that supported hand gestures and voice controls.

It all seems a long time ago now, but it's still a shame to see the service switched off. How many Xbox 360s are still out there in use, even if they're just cheap media players?

Thanks to Eurogamer reader Mark Kember for the heads up on this one.
