Buying VR for PC on Black Friday and Cyber Monday

There's little doubt that the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are the best VR devices around right now. They not only have a sizable games and experience library, they are also the best headsets suited to developing games in VR. In addition, the recently released Oculus Go is even simpler to use than the other two - it comes with a library of preloaded games and requires less fandangling with cables! The main differences between the two larger headsets involve movement. Namely, you can't stroll around with an Oculus Rift, while a HTC Vive supports full-on movement. As such, if you're looking to use a HTC Vive to its full potential, you'll need plenty of floor space for both walking, and wall space to mount its movement sensors. In addition, the set advises you remove pets from the surrounding area, and there are an unholy amount of cables involved. Although harder to setup, the HTC undoubtedly provides a more immersive experience, just on the basis that movement is involved.

The Oculus on the other hand, effectively starts working the moment it's setup with a controller. If movement is not a concern and space an issue, the Oculus Rift is definitely the headset you'll be wanting. Both will require a high-spec PC, and are actually similar with regards to hardware specs. Being a little cheaper, we'd recommend the Oculus Rift for people looking to enjoy a range of sit-down VR experiences, while the HTC Vive, with its cost and complexity of setting up, is better suited to people heavily invested in VR overall, particularly the development side of things. If both of these VR guys sound too overwhelming, you're best suited to PSVR or even a mobile headset, which both have minimal technical input, the lowest upfront price and maximum plug-and-play capabilities.

What kind of deals did we see in Black Friday 2017?

Last year gave us a litany of deals on SSDs and monitors, as well as some powerful pre-built machines from sites like Ebuyer, Overclockers, NewEgg and more. We also saw a lot of digital discounts from places like Humble Bundle, GOG, Green Man Gaming and others.
This Black Friday, we are likely to see a lot of multi-format games seeing huge discounts on PC. While console versions of games will be seeing significant discounts, you can expect the PC format editions to see bigger price cuts, judging by previous Black Friday happenings.
When it comes to hardware, the biggest components likely to see discounts this year are graphics cards, monitors, and virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The latter two have already seen discounts this year, so expect to see further price drops over Black Friday week taking prices down by a matter of hundreds, as well as a few extra games packed-in to entice you further. There will be discounts on other parts such as brand new CPUs, RAM and hard drives, and we'll be here to cover the best of the best.
If you're still searching for your ideal discount, remember that we'll be keeping this page updated in the run-up to Black Friday (and of course, Cyber Monday after it) so be sure to bookmark this page and check back regularly. You never know, you may just find the bargain you've been looking for in advance and skip all the flurry and madness that is Black Friday week itself.
