Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming, and though it's not a huge surprise - every home console since the series' N64 debut has had one - it seems to be the most definitive to date, as the title suggests.

How exactly? For one, it features every Super Smash Bros. character ever created in one game. No more complaining about the lack of Pichu, Snake or Wolf - they're all in here.

We also got an idea of features and other aspects, too, thanks to an E3 2018 showcase, all ahead of its release date on December 7th, 2018.

Update (August 8th) - As part of a September Nintendo Direct, a new fighter - Isabelle from Animal Crossing - joins the roster.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters explained

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to its namesake when it comes to character roster alone, featuring every single character released in previous entries - the 64 original, Melee, Brawl, Wii U and 3DS editions - whether they've featured just once, as DLC, or have been with the series since the beginning.

When it launches, Ultimate won't come every character playable from the outset, bbut the conditions for unlocking them will be "streamlined to give you the impression new fighters will be available thick and fast.

Who are the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters?

Not only is there a huge returning roster, there are several new fighters too:

  • Inkling (from Splatoon)
  • Ridley (from Metroid)
  • Simon (from Castlevania)
  • King K. Rool (from Donkey Kong)
  • Isabelle (from Animal Crossing)

Meanwhile, the game introduces the concept of 'Echo Fighters'. It's not a new concept; they are reskins of other characters with offer subtle differences in their movesets, but unlike costumes, have their own place in the roster. These include:

  • Lucina
  • Dark Pit
  • Daisy (new for Ultimate)
  • Dark Samus (new for Ultimate)
  • Chrom (new for Ultimate)
  • Richter (new for Ultimate)

Are there any more Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters coming?

Though series director Masahiro Sakurai has suggested not during E3 - "we've made including every single fighter ever our number one goal, so I'm kind of hoping you aren't expecting too many new challengers" - an August Nintendo Direct revealed five more (three of which were Echo Fighters) - so who knows who else will be revealed.
