THQ Nordic has announced a new Desperados game - Desperados 3 - for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next year.

Desperados is the Commandos-like, squad-based and real-time tactical series set in the Wild West. It began with Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive in 2001, and it's back to the first game German studio Mimimi has looked for inspiration with Desperados 3.

Desperados 3 will plonk you and your squad in overwhelming scenarios and leave it up to you how you want to inch through them. Do you want to go stealthily and use your varying abilities to thin the outlaw ranks, or do you fancy your chances guns blazing? It's all about overcoming the odds your way.

Desperados 3 looks more than a little like Mimimi's Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, which also blended squad-based stealth and strategy, albeit in feudal Japan. Jeffrey reviewed Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and wasn't overly impressed.

A second Desperados game - Cooper's Revenge - was released in 2006. It was a fiddly and frustrating experience but with a potent mix of tension and atmosphere when it eventually hit its stride. Jim Rossignol reviewed Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge for Eurogamer all those years ago.
