Fortnite's fledgling Playground mode will disappear next week

Back under construction.

Fortnite Battle Royale's sandboxy Playground mode will be taken offline next week, on Thursday, 12th July.

But - never fear - the mode will return in the future, and offer a raft of improvements, too.

Playground is Fortnite's mode which focuses on building. It's a creation orientated offering, with hour-long sessions not really designed for fighting.

Already, people have been using it to build impressive structures such as Fortnite's own version of a Mario Kart track with shopping trolleys.

Epic has set no timeframe for when Playground mode will return, but when it does the developer is hoping to include a few new options. Here's the list of proposed changes:

  • 1v1s and 2v2s
  • Aim assist for controllers
  • Editing other player's structures
  • Traps affecting teammates/enemies correctly
  • Highlighting teammates on the map
  • Damaging enemies with your pickaxe

Even then, Playground will be far from finished. Epic describes it as only a "first step into what a full creative mode looks like in Fortnite" - so expect far more detailed Mario Kart tracks in the future. How about a Blue Shell option?
