The Fortnite endgame has become a tad one-note. Anyone who's into the world's most popular game will know that late game strategy - most of the time - boils down to a building face-off with shotguns and rocket launchers.

Well, it sounds like developer Epic knows this, too - and wants Fortnite's endgame to be about more.

In a post on the Fortnite website titled Counterplay and Play Styles, Epic said it plans to make changes to the battle royale game to give players multiple ways to counter each other in combat and create more strategies to win the game.

"It's important to support a variety of late game strategies, that don't boil down to 'just build lol'," Epic said.

"We strongly believe that the evolution of Fortnite supports a wide range of play styles and counterplay. Currently, the superiority of shotguns, rockets and uncapped building are such a dominant play-style in the final circle that most other strategies are being drowned out."

So, what's to be done? Epic said it's exploring changes to weapon balance (I suspect a shotgun nerf of some sort) and resource economy, for example adding resource caps.

"You should be able to find Victory Royales through multiple strategies," Epic added.

"Shotguns should be strong, but other weapons have room to grow. Not every encounter should have to end in a build-off. We want to empower you to showcase your skill, strategy, and tactics in all variety of ways."

It's good to hear of Epic's plan to rejig the standard Fortnite final circle encounter loop, which for me is starting to feel a little long in the tooth. Shotguns are, clearly, the go-to choice for most late-game face-offs, and building when the circle closes in and enemies are up in your grill has become a muscle-memory response. Alternatives are welcome.
