Pokémon Go Fire and Ice event - end time, Lapras, Charmander, Cyndaquil, other event Pokémon and everything else you need to know about the Solstice event

UPDATE: Extended for another 24 hours.

The Pokémon Go Fire and Ice event takes place in the middle of June, and is set to increase the encounter rates of certain types and introduce new bonuses when out catching Pokémon.

Similar to the very recent grass event and rock event, trainers will encounter increased numbers of Fire and Ice Pokémon, with the likes of Charmander, Cyndaquil and Lapras cited, as well as ways for players to boost their XP gains.

What time does the Pokémon Go Fire and Ice Solstice event end? Event end time and details

Update: Developer Niantic announced the event will go on for another 24 hours, ending on Wednesday, June 21st, likely at the same times as below. No reason was given why; perhaps to tie into the actual solstice being today, and perhaps because of behind-the-scenes efforts on the Gym rework.

Original: The Pokémon Go Fire and Ice event will begin on Tuesday, June 13th and is set to end one week later on Tuesday, June 20th at the following times:

  • UK: 9pm (BST)
  • Europe: 10pm (CEST)
  • West Coast US: 1pm (PDT)
  • East Coast US: 4pm (EDT)

Lapras, Charmander, Cyndaquil and other fire and ice Pokémon likely to appear in the event

According to Niantic, we can expect to see more fire and ice Pokémon to appear in the wild throughout the event. Between official imagery and press releases, the roster is set to be quite substantial:

Confirmed fire and ice event Pokémon:

  • Charmander (and evolutions Charmeleon, Charizard)
  • Cyndaquil (and evolutions Quilava, Typhlosion)
  • Swinub (and evolution Piloswine)
  • Sneasel
  • Vulpix (and evolution Ninetales)
  • Seel (and evolution Dewgong)
  • Cloyster (and possibly previous evolution, Shellder)
  • Lapras
  • Houndour (and evolution Houndoom)
  • Flareon

All other Gen 1 and Gen 2 fire and ice Pokémon we also may see more of:

  • Ponyta (and evolution Rapidash)
  • Jynx
  • Slugma (and evolution Magcargo)

Note that we've excluded Ice / Flying type Delibird from the above list, since it has yet to appear in the game at all. Don't expect to see it, unless Niantic decides this event is the perfect time for it to make a debut.

While ice is reasonably common, fire is certainly more elusive, so it's a good time to catch and evolve any remaining creatures you need. Starter creatures Charmander, Cyndaquil, Houndour, Vulpix and their evolutions are uncommon, while it might also be a good chance to find the particularly rare Pokémon Lapras. Hopefully they don't get drowned out by the likes of Swinub, Sneasal and other commons.

How will these creatures appear? Other events such as the Water Festival and Grass Event saw increased appearance rates of themed creatures everywhere, not just in their natural biomes, and it's likely to the same here.

This means rarer creatures will appear outside of their usual spawn locations, meaning anyone could find an Lapras before too long. This is compared to Chansey during the recent Valentine's Day event, which only increased its chances of appearing in its usual habitat, going from being incredibly elusive to super rare.

As well as these rarer creatures, the event is also a great chance to get Candy for some of the more uncommon creatures if you haven't evolved and added them to your Pokedex already; getting those starters evolved might be a good thing to focus on, for example.

The World of Wonders season has come to Pokémon Go, which has brought the World of Wonders quest. Don't forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.

What else you need to know about the Pokémon Go Fire and Ice Solstice event

Alongside increased fire and ice spawns, Pokémon Go is also introducing several other changes and additions for the duration of the event.

1) Increased XP for special throws and hatching eggs

Catching creatures with special types of throws - including Curveballs, Nice Throws, Great Throws and Excellent Throws - as well as hatching eggs will give you "increased XP" for the duration of the event.

In short, all special throws have a 3x XP modifier, while egg hatches have a 5x XP modifier.

For example, if you have a Pokemon Go Plus, then every successful catch (classed as a first attempt) will give you 450XP, three times the standard 150XP. It's worth nothing there are no additional increases for catching Pokémon, evolving Pokémon, or Pokémon running away.

You can read up on how to throw perfect Curveballs and get Nice, Great and Excellent bonuses, as well as our egg hatching chart.

2) Lucky Eggs will be 50% off in the game's shop:

  • 1 Lucky Egg (40 Poké Coins, down from 80)
  • 8 Lucky Eggs (250 Poké Coins, down from 500)
  • 25 Lucky eggs (625 Poké Coins, down from 1250)

3) New gym mechanics are on the way. Developer Niantic has said it will be "temporarily disabling Gyms for a short period of time" to prepare for an update "focused on collaborative group gameplay" shortly after the event concludes. Whether this means Gyms will be unavailable during the event or after isn't fully clear, but we can expect changes to be made sometime in June.

It's been separately confirmed legendary Pokémon are finally coming this summer - and it wouldn't surprise us if they're part and parcel of the same update. Not long to wait now!

And while not strictly part of the Fire and Ice event, developer Niantic also announced the first real-life meetups and events in cities across the world.

That's your lot. It should be noted the recent Water Festival stealth introduced the concept of Shinies, including a Shiny Magikarp and Red Gyarados. It's unknown whether another such update will be introduced (or even more Shinies) but as usual, it doesn't hurt to keep your eyes peeled for anything suspect.
