Wonder Boy 3 remake lets you use your original Master System saves on Xbox One, PS4 and Switch

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, French developer Lizardcube's remake of Westone's 1989 platformer, can lay claim to what I'm fairly sure must be a world first: it'll allow you to share saves between Xbox One, PS4, Switch and Sega Master System versions of the game.

Remember this?

How so? The DotEmu published remake is so faithful it even includes the original password system - so if you've got any scribbled out in the manual of your Master System original it will work in the new version of the game.

In the original Wonder Boy 3, passwords let you get back into a game after you had died and after the power had been turned off, letting you keep your present form, gold and all the weapons and armour you possessed.

Its inclusion in the new game is part of a very dedicated remake of Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, a passion project for coder Omar Cornut. You'll also be able to flick between the original pixel art and Ben Fiquet's exquisite new artwork, as well as flipping between the original score and its more modern remake. You can also mix and match, clicking in the right stick to change soundtracks while hitting the shoulder button to change the visuals - so if you want to play with the modern look and the more vintage sounds, that's totally allowed.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is coming out this spring to Xbox One, PS4 and, as has been recently revealed, Nintendo's Switch. It's part of a small revival for the character, with Wonder Boy creator Ryuichi Nishizawa - who gives this remake his blessing and is also involved - also making a spiritual successor to the series in Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.
