Two years after the game's official reveal - and after a couple of delays for polishing - The Witcher 3 got its long-awaited release in early 2015. It might be the final entry in the current Witcher story for developers CD Projekt RED, but with a massive world to explore and a gargantuan list of quests to rattle through, it's certainly a fitting send-off for the last leg of this particular journey.

The Witcher 3 walkthrough - Start of the game

Once you've finished your bath and put some clothes on, you're ready to learn the basics of the Witcher 3. Begin by using Geralt's Witcher Senses to locate the key to the bedroom door - all the information you need to complete this task will be on-screen, assuming you enabled the tutorial.

When your Witcher Senses are activated, all the objects you can interact with in the room will be highlighted in red. You'll spot a number of candles that can be extinguished, as well as a couple of boxes and garments that can be examined. Feel free to explore your surroundings, talking to Yennefer or admiring the view from the balcony, if you like. Then, when you're ready to proceed, grab the key resting on the desk that's close to the locked door.

Complete the movement tutorial

Go to the lower level

With the key in your possession, open the locked door and make your way down the tower steps. At the bottom, you'll find Vesemir fast asleep in a chair, while Ciri practices alone in the courtyard below. Chat with Vesemir and - once the conversation ends - you'll automatically join Ciri outside. When her training session is complete, work your way through the conversation tree and agree to run the walls if you want to begin the movement tutorial.

Join Ciri in a run along the ramparts down to the lower courtyard

Next, follow Ciri up and around the castle's battlements, using the on-screen prompts to guide you as you climb ladders, scale walls, drop down off ledges, leap over chasms and sprint. Eventually, you'll reach ground level where Vesemir awaits. Finish off your conversation with Ciri by selecting the dialogue options of your choice then, once Vesemir addresses you, select 'Let's start with the fundamentals' to begin the combat tutorial.

Get to grips with the basics of combat

Draw your sword

After you've been introduced to swords, magic, potions, blade oils and bombs, get ready to put your learning into practice. Follow the instruction to unsheath and sheath your sword, and to discover the ins and outs of targeting your opponents. Next, follow the on-screen prompts to attempt a fast attack, a strong attack, a dodge, a roll and, finally, a parry.

Learn to use Geralt's Signs

Cast the Quen Sign

That's the basics of swordplay taken care of, so open your Quick Access Menu and get ready to do some magic. Use the spell wheel to select the defensive Quen Sign and follow the prompts to cast it. Next, cast the fire-spewing Igni Sign and follow it up with an enemy-stunning telekinetic blast of Aard. When instructed, cast Axii to temporarily disorientate your opponent, then cast Yrden to lay a magic trap that slows enemy movements. Finally, toss a bomb at the ensnared Vesemir.

Stand in the highlighted spot

To continue your training, head over to the spot that's highlighted on your mini-map. There are two glowing training posts situated nearby - throw a bomb at one of them to destroy it. That concludes your basic training so, when prompted, decide whether you want to free train (if you feel you need a bit more combat practice) or get stuck into your main adventure.
