PS4's next big update adds folders

Sorted.

The PlayStation 4's next big update adds a folders option.

Finally!

The beta for PS4's upcoming 4.00 update, codenamed Shingen, rolls out tomorrow for everyone included in the public beta program, Sony said.

The update refreshes the user interface, adds the aforementioned folders and updates the Quick Menu.

With the UI refresh, Sony has revised pop-up notifications, updated system icons and added new system backgrounds to choose from. The idea is the console has a "more refined and easy to use" user interface, Sony said.

The Quick Menu (brought up by pressing and holding the PS button on DualShock 4) has been made faster to use. It now only covers a portion of the screen, too, so you don't have to leave gameplay.

Usefully, you can now customise the Quick Menu to add shortcuts for the features you want immediate access to.

The Share Menu has been overhauled, too, and, like the Quick Menu, only covers a portion of the screen. You can now upload longer video clips to Twitter (up to 140 seconds).

Now onto folders. You can now create folders on PS4's content launcher and library.

There's a new tab in Library called Purchased Content, which shows all the content you own while your main library only shows content currently installed on your PS4. This will help de-clutter your Library if you've downloaded a lot of games, demos and betas over the years.

Meanwhile, there's a new ability to view Trophies offline. There's also a button that lets you reveal the content of a Hidden Trophy. It'll still be hidden by default, but you can choose to see what it's called.

Sony said the 4.00 update has more features that won't be available in the beta, so expect more to emerge from this once it's live for everyone.
