Ubisoft is making a Star Trek VR game

Bridge Crew, a co-op experience for Rift, Vive and PSVR.

Ubisoft is making an intriguing co-op VR game, based on JJ Abrams' Star Trek film series, and coming to Oculus Rift, Vive and PlayStation VR. It's called Star Trek: Bridge Crew.

ABC News revealed the game ahead of its debut at Ubisoft's E3 press conference, having been privy to a promo shoot featuring Star Trek actors Karl Urban (McCoy in the movies), LeVar Burton (Geordi from The Next Generation) and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine from Voyager).

Bridge Crew is a co-op game - presumably an online one - that casts four players as the captain, tactical officer, engineering officer and helm officer of a Federation starship called the Aegis. The four sit aboard a virtual starship bridge - modelled on the Enterprise's bridge in the films - operating their desks on the vessel using motion controllers. They talk to each other to co-ordinate their actions.

It's a concept that seems to have drawn inspiration from hardcore starship bridge simulator Artemis and brilliant mobile party game Spaceteam - and it sounds like a clever, natural fit for VR.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew will be released in fall/autumn 2016. Its debut at the Ubisoft conference didn't confirm that it would work online - let's hope so, otherwise it will be very, very, very expensive to play.
