More than 9 million played the Star Wars Battlefront beta

"Great, kid! Don't get cocky."

How big is Star Wars Battlefront going to be this November/Christmas? If the beta is anything to go by: big (although the beta does not cost £40-50).

More than 9 million people logged into and played the Star Wars Battlefront beta over the past few days, EA DICE has announced. Making it, senior producer Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir added, "the single largest beta in the history of EA". Servers closed today at 4pm BST.

"Ever since we revealed Star Wars Battlefront back in April, we knew the beta would be a huge test for our game," she wrote. "After all, the beta has been one of the most talked about topics around the game over the last six months, and it was exciting (and a little nerve racking if I'm being completely honest) to open it up to the world.

"And like Han Solo at the end of A New Hope, we're glad you showed up. Even more importantly than just showing up, you've been spending a lot of time playing, having a great time and leaving us some invaluable feedback, as we continue to tune and balance the game until launch.

"On behalf of the team at DICE, and everyone at EA, thank you for playing."

Crucially, the beta - despite teething issues - held up from a technical point of view. Considering the enormous strain we now know the servers were under, that's an encouraging sign for the game's 17th November launch. But with more modes and maps and variables slung in, there's potentially more that can go awry. Still: encouraging.

As mentioned in our Battlefront Season Pass report today, and by Ingvarsdottir in parts of her statement not replicated here, the Battlefront beta only contains a small portion of the final game - and some modes arriving at launch have only just been revealed.

Did you play the beta? What did you think? Will you be taking the plunge in November?
