Tomb Raider reboot has sold 8.5m copies

Making it the most successful in the franchise's history.

Tomb Raider's 2013 reboot has sold 8.5m copies, making it the most successful game in the entire franchise.

Of course, this is also taking into account Tomb Raider's 2014 Definitive Edition on Xbox One and PS4.

Upon its March 2013 release, Tomb Raider sold 3.4m copies in a month, which also set a record for the series, but fell halfway shy of what Square Enix thought it would do.

It eventually reached profitability by the end of 2013.

"Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game's incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players," said Crystal Dynamics head of studio Darrell Gallagher. "Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game."

Tomb Raider's sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is due later this year as an Xbox One and Xbox 360 exclusive, though Microsoft has confirmed that its exclusivity "has a duration."
