Warhammer 40K: Regicide is Battle Chess with Chainswords

And Space Marines. And Orks.

There's a Warhammer 40K chess video game - and this is what it looks like.

Warhammer 40,000: Regicide includes a variety of battlefields based on the lore of Games Workshop's tabletop universe, as well as chess pieces re-imagined as Space Marines and Orks.

You can play Regicide using traditional chess rules, or spice things up with Regicide mode, which adds two phases of combat to the game, as well as the ability to open fire on enemies and use psychic powers.

Regicide is a PC, tablet and mobile game where one unified account means you can play multiplayer cross-platform. There's a story mode, too, although we don't know how this works yet. The developer is Hammerfall Publishing, which is based in Sydney, Australia.

It's hard to know how this one will turn out. Recently-released games based on Warhammer 40K have hardly set the world on fire, and Warhammer rights holder Games Workshop seems keen to license out its crown jewels to anyone and everyone at the moment. But the Regicide gameplay video shows promise. One to watch.
