Torchlight and Diablo devs reveal space combat sim Rebel Galaxy

No, it's not a Star Wars thing.

Earlier this year a couple of the founders of Torchlight developer Runic Games left the company it created to start up a new studio called Double Damage Games. Now that new outfit has revealed the first gameplay of its upcoming space combat sim Rebel Galaxy.

Contrary to what you might think based on its title, Rebel Galaxy is not Star War-related, though it does have stars, wars, and some weird-looking aliens.

Double Damage described its debut game as "a swashbuckling space adventure, with action-packed combat, exploration, discovery, trade, and 'negotiation' with the outlandish denizens at the edge of the known universe."

You'll play as a ship's commander who cruises through the cosmos exploring strange phenomena, fending off pirates, mining materials, and interacting with the locals. Combat appears to happen in real-time, and Double Damage noted that "Rebel Galaxy is above all a space epic of adventure, exploration, and combat."

This new studio was founded by Torchlight designer Travis Baldree and Diablo 2 co-designer Erich Schaefer, whose brother Max remains at Runic where he's the CEO.

Rebel Galaxy is due out next year on Steam, PS4 and "maybe XBox One".
