F.E.A.R. Online gets an October Steam release date

The beloved FPS series goes F2P. Scary!

F.E.A.R. Online, the free-to-play spin-off of Monolith's horror FPS franchise, is coming to Steam on 17th October.

They deserved to die. They all deserved to die.

Developed by Korean studio InPlay Interactive and published by MMO company Aeria Games, F.E.A.R. Online will feature both competitive and co-op multiplayer modes.

Its story campaign takes the Left 4 Dead approach where up to four players team up as F.E.A.R. operatives investigating the activity surrounding lovable creepy ghost girl, Alma Wade, following the events of F.E.A.R. 2.

Additionally, F.E.A.R. 3's Soul King mode is returning, in which players play as disembodied wraiths scrambling around the battlefield in search of enemies to possess. Once you embody them, you can use their corporeal form to slaughter AI foes and other players for points. Get killed while possessing a body and you'll get booted back to wraith form. Die in wraith form and forfeit half your points. It's a crazy mode that wasn't my favourite from that shockingly inventive shooter, but it still scored points for originality.

There's also a more conventional deathmatch mode set in arenas full of AI monsters.

F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. 2 developer Monolith eventually moved away from the series it founded to instead work on Gotham City: Impostors and more recently Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, which is apparently the best Batman game ever set in Tolkien's universe.
