A new Spelunky world record has been set

UPDATE: New record bested by Buddy7heElf with $3,140,325.

UPDATE 22/04/2014: Well that didn't last long! Within a couple of days of YamaYamaDingDong setting the Spelunky world record with $3,109,850, did a man named Buddy7heElf come along and surpass it with an astounding $3,140,325.

That's pretty significant as YamaYamaDingDong's high score was only a mere $4000 over that of previous record holder Bananasaurus_Rex. By comparison, Buddy7heElf demolished the former record with a lead of $30,475. Crickey!

You can watch the entirety of Buddy7heElf's run below. The successful attempt begins at 7:30 in the first video.

ORIGINAL STORY 15/04/2014:Two months ago Spelunky savant Bananasaurus_Rex set the new world record in Mossmouth's action roguelike after beginning a game where he received the level-destroying Plasma Cannon right off the bat. Most would have choked and squandered this good fortune, but Bananasaurus_Rex kept his cool in a run that lasted nearly seven and a half hours and resulted in an astonishing final score of $3,105,850. This not only set the world record, but utterly dominated the previous record of $2,980,000. Given Bananasaurus_Rex's diligent destruction of every brick in his path to amass this $3 million-plus fortune, it was believed that this would forever remain the top score in Spelunky.

Ho-lee hell!

But life is full of surprises.

Enter Twitch user YamaYamaDingDong. A mere 18 year old mortal, Mr. DingDong has crested Bananasaurus_Rex's legendary score by $4,000 with an astronomical $3,109,850. Good god!

On his Twitch profile YamaYamaDingDong noted that he's been streaming Spelunky since 19th October, 2013 and this new record won't cause him to rest on his laurels. Instead, he's aiming to improve this score with a goal of $3.25 million. Let's wish him luck!

In the meantime, you can watch YamaYamaDingDong's record-breaking run below. At four hours and 45 minutes, it's not short, but the patient observer will find that there is much to learn from it.
