Gearbox's Homeworld HD is now Homeworld Remastered

"This is more than a simple re-release or up-res..."

What the Homeworld Remastered Collector's Edition may look like.

Sci-fi real-time strategy game Homeworld HD is now Homeworld Remastered, Gearbox Software has announced.

"Previously, we'd been referring to this effort as Homeworld HD but as work progressed it became clear that title didn't properly communicate the scope of the work," Gearbox's interactive marketing manager Chris Faylor wrote on the company's blog.

"This is more than a simple re-release or up-res - given the input we've received from fans, mod makers and series veterans, the result is full-fledged remastering of nearly all aspects alongside the archival Classic versions."

Gearbox has launched the HomeworldRemastered.com website which contains a survey about potential Collector's Edition options the studio is considering.

Gearbox picked up the Homeworld franchise after previous rights owner THQ went bust. The series was created by Dawn of War and Company of Heroes creator Relic Entertainment, now owned by Sega.

"It is with great love and respect for developer Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative franchise that Gearbox Software acquired the space strategy series and is championing its re-introduction to players new and old," Gearbox said.

"As you guide your fleet, you'll become a commander who makes strategic decisions that determine the survival of humankind. From epic spaceship battles and desperate struggles for victory to building a massive fleet and watching it persist throughout missions, Homeworld is defined by amazing moments that helped it become a legend."

Homeworld Remastered Collection includes remastered versions of Homeworld and Homeworld 2. Expect high resolution textures and models, new graphical effect and support for HD, Ultra HD and 4K resolutions. The series' original audio and video artists and recreated cinematic scenes in high fidelity, Gearbox said. Multiplayer for both games has been combined into one centralised mode.

The Collection also includes Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 Classic, which are archival versions of the original games compatible with modern operating systems.
