South Park: The Stick of Truth delayed to 2014

But, detailed seven minute gameplay video softens blow.

Ubisoft has delayed the South Park role-playing game to 2014.

South Park: The Stick of Truth had been due out in December 2013. Now, it will release on 4th March 2014.

Ubisoft picked up the Obsidian-developed game after previous publisher THQ went out of business. Explaining the delay, Ubisoft said South Park needed more work than first thought.

"When Ubisoft picked up the game, we thought: Easy," communications manager Gary Steinman wrote on the Ubisoft blog.

"We'll put some marketing muscle behind Stick of Truth, toss some additional development resources at it, then take it to the finish line with Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The game's almost done, anyways - so what more could we do?

"Apparently, quite a bit more."

Ubisoft North America's president Laurent Detoc added that South Park required a "major overhaul".

"Within three weeks after acquiring the game, we sadly realised we had to turn this thing upside down if we hoped to deliver the experience everybody wanted," he said.

"It's been such a major overhaul to get to the point where we are that we couldn't let it go, even if that meant missing December."

Apparently South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who are heavily involved with the project, agree.

"We always wanted the game to feel like you're actually in an episode of South Park," they said in a joint statement. "Getting the game up to the crappy standards of the show has been a real challenge and we're excited to say it's taken way longer than we thought it would."

Ah well. Cartman warned us this might happen.

To soften the blow, Ubisoft released a detailed, seven minute gameplay trailer giving us our clearest indication yet of how the South Park RPG will play.
