Call of Duty: Ghosts next-gen upgrade plan detailed

Xbox Game Ahead Program announced. Buy a disc-less dual-license digital version.

Activision has announced the Call of Duty: Ghosts next-generation upgrade plan.

The plan means those who buy the shooter on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 can upgrade to the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version for £10.

Here's how it works on PlayStation: every new physical copy of Call of Duty: Ghosts for PS3 includes a flyer with a unique Sony code on it. Redeem the code on the PlayStation Store to download the PS4 version of the game for £10 / $10 / €10.

If you buy the digital PS3 version from the PlayStation Store, you can also upgrade. To do this, go to the PlayStation Store and purchase the discounted PS4 version for, again, £10 / $10 / €10.

In both circumstances you can play the PS3 version on your PS3 and the PS4 version on your PS4.

This offer ends on 31st March 2014.

Elsewhere, various shops are running promotions that perform a similar function. As we reported yesterday, in the UK, GAME gives you a £40 trade-in value when you upgrade a variety of games, including COD, on both PS4 and Xbox One.

Now for Xbox. Microsoft has announced the Xbox Game Ahead Program. You can buy a disc-less dual-license digital version of Call of Duty: Ghosts at participating retailers for, in the US, a suggested retail price of $69.99. This includes the Xbox 360 digital version of Ghosts as well as the Xbox One digital version, linked and unlocked via a user's Xbox Live gamertag. More information on how to pre-order will be announced soon.

Using the Program, you can also buy a digital version of Call of Duty: Ghosts directly from the Xbox Live Marketplace for $59.99. Then, when you're ready to buy a digital Xbox One version, you can get it for $10 from the Xbox Live Marketplace. This offer ends on 31st March 2014.

In the UK, GAME'S £40 trade-in offer applies to Xbox as well as PlayStation.

As Activision announced, you'll be able to take your in-game stats and profiles with you from current-gen to next-gen, but you must stay within the same family of consoles.

You do this via a Call of Duty account, which you can sign up for online or in-game when Ghosts launches.

There's also the £34.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 Call of Duty: Ghosts Season Pass, which upgrades to next-gen at no additional cost (again, offer ends 31st May 2014). The Season Pass includes access to four Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC Map Packs. You'll also get the Team Leader digital content pack that includes a unique multiplayer character head, weapon camo, reticle, player patch, player card and player background.

And, of course, Ghosts will be available for digital download on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 5th November 2013. It'll be available to download on PS4 and Xbox One when those consoles launch in November. All digital versions cost £59.99 / $59.99 / €69.99.
