This is how the Tomb Raider multiplayer mode looks

And you can play as Zachary Levi.

Tomb Raider publisher Square Enix has revealed the first footage from the game's multiplayer mode - a first for the series.

The offering sees Lara Croft and her shipwrecked crew fight the inhabitants of the game's mysterious island setting, deathmatch-style.

Development is progressing separately from single-player studio Crystal Dynamics, at Deus Ex: Human Revolution developer Eidos Montreal.

The footage, embedded below, comes as part of the Final Hours of Tomb Raider developer diary series.

The multiplayer menu, with an intriguing option we spotted titled 'Fears and Setbacks'.

Scenes show lots of climbing, familiar weapons such as Lara's bow, plus characters from the single-player campaign.

Players can ambush opponents using traps - one is a lightning rod, which shocks enemies when they pass by.

The video also reveals that Zachary "Chuck" Levi, presenter of the Final Hours of Tomb Raider videos, is a playable character in the multiplayer mode.

The finished product is due for release on 5th March for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
