PS Plus in January: free BioShock 2, Mortal Kombat, Guardians of Middle-earth

Bilbo ho ho.

The free PS3 games for PS Plus subscribers in January are BioShock 2, Guardians of Middle-earth and Mortal Kombat, says Sony. They're available from 2nd January.

On 16th January Sony will add Jet Set Radio (Vita), and on 23rd January Pinball Arcade (Vita).

The arrival of new free games means old free games have to go. Those old games are Batman: Arkham City, Bulletstorm and Resi 5. Mortal Kombat Vita and Knytt Underground also depart.

The price of an annual PS Plus sub will also drop over Christmas (and up to 9th January) by 25 per cent down to £30.

They didn't get on the box.

BioShock 2 surfaced in early 2010 and flew the franchise flag admirably. It was a stop-gap while BioShock creator Irrational Games went away to work on BioShock Infinite, but it had plenty of good ideas of its own. Eurogamer said: 8/10 just like we always do etc..

Co-developers 2K Marin and Digital Extremes have since gone on to other things. 2K Marin is making the other new XCOM action shooter game. Rumour has it that this returned to the drawing board to become a third-person squad-based shooter.

Digital Extremes meanwhile made The Darkness 2, and is now off doing some free-to-play shooter called Warframe.

Guardians of Middle-earth is the decent but relatively shallow console MOBA released recently featuring Lord of the Rings/Hobbit characters.

Mortal Kombat is the fighting game reboot that put the series back on the map. It's knocking on for two years old now, and developer NetherRealm has nearly finished new DC Universe fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Jet Set Radio is 9/10 brilliant, by the way.
