American McGee's upcoming Akaneiro: Demon Hunters resembles an isometric Okami

Beta sign-ups have begun.

American McGee's of Alice fame has just shown off the first gameplay video - below - for his studio Spicy Horse's upcoming free-to-play action-RPG Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, set for release later this year on mobile platforms and PC as a browser-based game.

The Japanese watercolour art style is highly reminiscent of Clover's masterpiece Okami, while the isometric dungeon crawling combat looks more like Diablo. That sounds like a winning combination to me.

Where American McGee's Alice was a gothic take on an old tale, Akaneiro loosely translates the story of Little Red Riding Hood to feudal Japan. You'll play as a red-hooded figure that belongs to a clan dedicated to protecting the populace from Yokai i.e. Japanese folklore demons.

If you'd like to try it for yourself, the closed beta sig-ups just went live today on Spicy Horse's official site.
