Cancelled Final Fantasy 2 American NES cartridge put on eBay
"The only real copy in the world."
A "one-of-a-kind" English translation of Final Fantasy 2 for NES has been put on eBay.
The price tag? $50,000 (about £31,700).
Take a sip of coffee and cast your mind back a couple of decades - you'll remember Final Fantasy 2 was never released on NES in the West.
Developer Square (as it was then known) was once working on an English translation, but it ultimately discarded the project in favour of localising Final Fantasy 4 for the new-fangled SNES.
Photos from the game's eBay listing (thanks, IGN) reveal the cartridge in question was a one-off demo copy, made by Square for use at CES in 1991. There's also a snap or two of the seller's cat.
While labelled as a "sample", the entire game is playable in English from start to finish.
"I have been the proud owner of this cartridge for over nine years now, and as far as I am aware, this is the only legitimate copy of the game that exists," seller Frank Cifaldi noted. "Any other copies you have seen of Final Fantasy 2 for the NES have been bootlegs, this is the real deal.
"A pre-production sample cartridge for any video game from this era is rare indeed, but for one to survive for a game that was never actually released is something of a miracle. Having that unreleased game be a part of one of the most important franchises in video game history is basically unheard of."
