Valve to release Source Filmmaker

Free download lets you make your own Team Fortress 2 animations.

Source Filmmaker, a free program that lets players make their own animated Team Fortress 2 clips, launches later this year, Valve has announced.

It's the same storytelling tool that the studio uses to create its own cinematics, including the recent Meet the Team shorts, somehow shrinking the entire production pipeline of an animation studio onto a single PC. Impressive stuff.

"The goal of the SFM was to develop a storytelling tool that allowed us to create computer animated movies more efficiently, and with greater creative freedom," explained Valve designer Bay Raitt.

"Over the past five years, we've produced more than 50 animated shorts with the SFM. The Source Filmmaker will allow our community to create their own movies in Team Fortress 2 and in their own Source SDK-created mods."

See the clip below for a closer look at what it's all about.

It's currently in closed beta and will be available to all some time later this year.
