Microsoft announces new Surface tablet

Ultra-thin keyboard built into cover.

Microsoft has unveiled a new tablet device called Surface.

The device features an ultra thin keyboard built into its screen cover, a kickstand incorporated into its body and HD front and rear-facing video cameras.

"Conceived, designed and engineered entirely by Microsoft employees," according to the announcement blurb, there's also a full USB port and a 10.6 inch screen.

It'll be available in a Windows RT and a Windows 8 Pro model. The former will be available day and date with the launch of windows 8, while the latter will follow about 90 days later.

A releases outside of the US has not yet been confirmed.

There's no price tag yet, but expect it to be "competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC".
