Rockstar's new multi-platform shooting game Max Payne 3 has beaten Blizzard's new PC and Mac game Diablo 3 to the top of the UK all-formats chart.

This is the first Max Payne game to debut at number one. Max Payne 3 beat Max Payne 2's 2003 launch week total by almost 10 to 1.

Payne: has Rockstar cracked it?

Max Payne 3 enjoyed this year's second biggest video game launch behind Mass Effect 3.

The larger slice of Max Payne 3 sales (58 per cent) went to Xbox 360. That left 42 per cent of the pie to PS3.

Number cruncher Chart-track GfK doesn't track digital sales. Without them, Diablo 3 boxed sales were 8000 copies behind Max Payne 3's - not a lot, considering the size of IPs involved.

Apparently, 11 per cent of boxed Diablo 3 sales were for the snazzy 69.99 (RRP) Collector's Edition.

FIFA Street was third, last week's leader Sniper Elite V2 fourth and FIFA 12 fifth.

Prototype 2 was sixth, Modern Warfare 3 seventh, Battlefield 3 eighth, Assassin's Creed: Revelations ninth and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games 10th.

In the PSP-specific chart, Football Manager Handheld 2012 beat previous leader FIFA 12 by the slimmest of margins.

Tweeted Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson: "However, we do still have a number-one this week - FMH12 on PSP goes up to no.1 selling ONE more copy than FIFA. Couldn't make it up..."

Eurogamer's Max Payne 3 review awarded 7/10. Eurogamer's Diablo 3 review will be published early this week.
