A whopping five million people have registered to play free-to-play tank MMO World of Tanks, Wargaming.net has announced.

The game reached the impressive milestone on the eve of its one-year anniversary.

World of Tanks set a Guinness World Record for peak concurrent users on a single server on 23rd January: 91,311. It's now "topping" 172,000.

"We didn't expect World of Tanks would become this popular," Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi said.

"The game's success has given us confidence we needed to continue our expansion into the world of online wargames."

World of Tanks didn't appear in Europe and North America until 12th April.
