Microsoft unveils Halo 4 at E3

With a shiny but short teaser trailer.

It's official: a new instalment in the Halo series is on the way.

The announcement was made at the climax of Microsoft's E3 2011 press conference. Bossman Don Mattrick took to the stage right at the end to round up what had been seen so far and to introduce a teaser trailer.

It showed a red cloud floating in space and a bit of fiery smoke. Then Master Chief was revealed, blasting his way around a space station in zero gravity. There was just time to see him drifting towards some kind of giant circle of light before it was all over.

A logo then confirmed the game in question as Halo 4, with a release date of "Holiday 2012" given.

It's no big surprise, of course - news of Halo 4 first broke earlier today. Still, you know, nice to be sure.
