UPDATE: Nintendo has confirmed to Eurogamer that the Nintendo 3DS system update will launch in Europe on 7th June.

"By downloading the free update via a broadband internet connection, Nintendo 3DS users can enjoy a number of new features and enhancements including an internet browser and access to the Nintendo eShop, where users can browse and purchase downloadable content," Nintendo said in a statement.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Nintendo 3DS e-Shop and internet browser launch on 7th June in Japan and 6th June in North America, Nintendo has announced.

We're checking on a European release date now.

The long-awaited firmware update had been due out this month and, before that, on the handheld's launch.

In a brief update on Nintendo's Japanese website, translated by Andriasang, both the e-Shop and internet browser are mentioned.

Yesterday reports based on Japanese magazine Famitsu revealed what Nintendo 3DS owners can expect from the firmware.

DSi owners will be able to import DSiWare content onto their 3DS.

New 3DS Ware titles include Rockman Dash 3 Prologue for 200 yen (Ł1.50) and Petitcom for 800 yen (Ł6.04). Nintendo also mentions 3D versions of NES Legend of Zelda, Excitebike and Xevious for its 3D Classic range of rejigged retro games.

There's also untouched versions of full Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Gear titles, including Super Mario Land and Sonic & Tails 2.
