Monster Hunter Freedom 3, or Monster Hunter Portable 3rd as it's known in the west, looks set to become the best-selling game in Japan for the 2010 financial year.

The monster PSP game is already the fastest-selling PSP game in history. Capcom's shipped four million copies of the game in Japan alone, bringing total sales of the series up to 17 million.

Last month Freedom 3 became Capcom's fastest-selling game of all time, beating the likes of Street Fighter, Mega Man and Resident Evil.

The game's only been on sale just over a month.

The Monster Hunter series' phenomenal success is very much a local phenomenon. It is still relatively unknown outside of Japan – despite Capcom's effort to boost its widespread appeal.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is yet to be announced for Europe and the US.
