Yuna sequel follows FFX

Forget FFXI for now – it’s Yuna’s turn to dress up and shoot people

A while ago, Square announced plans to exploit Yuna and Riku from Final Fantasy X in their own spin-off releases, no doubt to help balance its finances. Although interest in these two games bubbled and frothed on the surface of gaming forums all over the world, there seemed little chance that either would amount to anything significant for Final Fantasy fans.

However, promotional posters at the recent Tokyo Game Show showed a greatly changed Yuna, with skintight hotpants and dual pistols, fresh from her climactic battle with Sin, and flanked by two silhouetted female companions. A stark contrast to the quiet, humble summoner found in Final Fantasy X.

And it seems that her game is more of a direct sequel to Final Fantasy X (dubbed X-2, Mega Man style) than a spin-off, and it follows Yuna's path through the now vibrant world of Spira, as temples and towns start to re-embrace the forbidden machines after years of punishment for having done so.

The game is apparently more of an action RPG now, although the battle system still remains under wraps. Yuna and friends will have new abilities though, and yes, Yuna's principle method of extermination is via two rather enormous Robocop-style blasters with gold trim.

Final Fantasy X-2 is scheduled for a March 2003 release in Japan, and if only because of Yuna's growing sauciness, expect to hear a lot more about it in the coming months.
