Apple to unveil new iPhone models on 10th September - report

UPDATE: Apple has officially announced its 10th September iPhone event, confirming earlier reports that the company would hold its next big pow-wow on that date.

Brightly-coloured artwork for the announcement is styled to reflect the incoming iOS7 operating system, a neon and transparent design refresh that will leave beta in the near future.

We're likely to hear an official release date for that at the upcoming event - along with announcements of the much-rumoured iPhone 5S and budget price iPhone 5C models.

The festivities will kick off at 10AM Californian time (6PM in the UK). We'll be covering the news as it happens.

ORIGINAL STORY: Apple is set to unveil two new iPhone models on 10th September, a new report suggests.

The date was overheard by the Wall Street Journal's tech blog AllThingsD, which has a good record for such matters.

It will be almost a year since iPhone 5 was revealed to the world on 12th September 2012.

But what will Apple show at the event? Rumours suggest another incremental upgrade is due - named by various sources as iPhone 5S.

A likely area for upgrade is the iPhone's camera. Nokia's Lumia 1020 will soon launch with a whopping 41 Megapixel camera - vastly outstripping the iPhone 5's 8MP lens.

Apple watchers have also claimed the 5S will include a fingerprint sensor within its home button. The company acquired fingerprint security company AuthenTec last year for $356 million and has yet to show what it's been working on.

Also rumoured is a budget price iPhone - said to be named iPhone 5C for the range of colours it will debut in.

This cheaper model will be manufactured from plastic and fibreglass, Apple Insider claimed.

Both devices will run on Apple's revamped iOS 7, a more colourful and layered version of the portable operating system that's currently in beta.
