Apple preparing pocket-sized iPad production - report

Suppliers readied for autumn launch.

Apple is preparing to launch a new pocket-sized version of the iPad, a new report suggests.

The California-based company has told Asian component suppliers to be ready for mass production of the new device in September, sources told Wall Street Journal.

The iPad's new, smaller screen?

The iPad Pocket/Nano/Micro will likely feature a screen smaller than 8 inches. All other iPad models boast a 9.7 inch display.

A September start for manufacturing suggests an autumn launch for the new iPad, which tallies with earlier rumours that Apple would launch two separate iPad versions in 2012, the latter in October.

This autumn will see the tablet market become increasingly crowded, with competition from Amazon, Google and Microsoft's freshly-announced Surface device.
