Another Baja game announced

This time it's Activision in the driving seat.

Only a few short months after THQ announced that it's working on an off-road racer based on the famous Baja 1000 race (and rather snappily called BAJA), Activision has revealed that it's also got a bun of that description in the oven.

SCORE International Baja 1000 is Activision's offering, and you'll be able to pick it up this autumn on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2 and PC. It's set to feature over 90 vehicles, covering all of the various classes that compete in the real Baja 1000 - ranging from trucks to motorbikes to ATVs.

Activision reckons SCORE International Baja 1000 will come replete with realistic dirt and damage modelling, which is just as well given what a huge factor those two elements play in the real Baja races. With the course running down along Mexico's Baja California peninsula, finishing the race at all is seen as an achievement, let alone placing highly.

If any of that sounds thematically familiar then, yes, Motorstorm sprang to our minds as well. The Baja 1000 races have been running since 1967, so this isn't exactly a new property - the fact that both THQ and Activision seem to have hit on the idea of doing Baja games at exactly the same time seems entirely likely to be down to the success of Evolution Studios' mixed-vehicle, damage-heavy racer.

Of course, Evolution isn't resting on its laurels either - it's got a sequel, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, on the way later this year, which will shift from dusty desert environments to thick jungles clogged with vegetation.
