Assassin's Creed Odyssey physical sales down 25% on Origins

Ancient Greece-set Assassin's Creed Odyssey has received a warm reception from fans and critics, although its launch sales are slower out of the gate compared to last year's Origins.

Odyssey arrived second in this week's top 40 chart, behind FIFA 19, but with 25 per cent fewer physical sales than last year's AC entry (thanks for the comparison, GI.biz).

But it's not too much of a worry for Ubisoft. The rise in digital sales will cover a bit of that (UK numbers company Chart-Track doesn't count these) - and Odyssey feels like a game many would choose to own digitally because it's built to be played for months.

Last year's Origins also launched after a year break for the series, while Odyssey arrived earlier - so there's longer to build up sales in the run up to Christmas, even if the next few weeks will see the launch of competition such as Red Dead Redemption 2.

In happier news, Forza Horizon 4 arrived in third place with launch sales up slightly on Horizon 3, which is impressive when you consider the rise of digital downloads and the fact Horizon 4 is available digitally for just £7/month through Xbox Game Pass.

Speaking of Game Pass, a statement shared to Eurogamer by Microsoft this morning confirmed that Forza Horizon 4's launch had prompted "a huge uplift in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and engagement".

Nintendo Switch exclusive Super Mario Party also performed well, arriving fifth in the chart behind Marvel's Spider-Man.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise entered in 21st place, while Astro Bot Rescue Mission turned up in 22nd.
